Anyone had a total thyroidectomy?

Hi, just looking for experiences really.

I was diagnosed with Graves’ disease back in May this year, but I was pretty symptomatic for about 18 months before that, but wrote it off to stress (hand tremor, weight loss, sweating, high heart rate etc). I started on a low dose of carbimazole but my levels kept fluctuating and landed me in a&e a couple of times. So now I’m on a much higher dose of carbimazole and I feel awful!! I’m bed bound. The endo thinks thyroid surgery would be a good plan (I have 3 kids and live overseas from family support so radiotherapy isn’t ideal). I’m not too worried about the actual surgery, I just don’t want to feel terrible for ages after and struggle to get the thyroid replacement right. I’m starting a new job in January and it’s going to be taxing, I don’t want to be dealing with palpitations, low calcium etc.
Any stories or advice greatly appreciated. I’m seeing the ENT surgeon this week!

This all sounds highly encouraging! Especially the feeling more human part. How much thyroxine are you on now?

I feel pretty good thanks, was thinking the other day how much less nervous and tired I am (finally) but this has been coming and going and coming back since 2015 so I’m almost looking forward to surgery now

Hi Why, I’m so glad you’re feeling a bit better now!

I’m taking 100mcg 3 times a week and 75mcg on the other 4 days. The endo had my lab results from before the op which I couldn’t get, I was very hypothyroid right before surgery, which is what they wanted, and explains why I felt so shocking!

I’ve found that since I started taking the higher dose this week the high heart rate is back. I’m hoping it will settle. I’m definitely still going the right way though, I’ve been building up to 2km walks every day. The goal is to be able to run again at some point. This time 6 weeks ago I couldn’t stand up to shower.

Oh I hope it does settle down soon, I hate the irregular heart thing especially as my mum was left with sort of intractable AF which led to emboli then strokes (she was unlucky tho, that’s rare, they say it usually gets better once settled on replacement thyroxine).

Excited for you to be out running again in due course, thank you for updating. Endos don’t give me much idea of what to expect except for assuring me it’s all so much easier without a thyroid. My appointment has been brought forward from mid Jan to the 3rd so fingers crossed they’ll be happy with my levels this time 😊

How are things Op?

Hope you’re both still alive 😕 bumping for some post-op success stories 🙏
