Well Isaw a consultant on Friday & he said Floradix was fine (I thought she should take both) - I will check with him on Wednesday to see if there is a high dose liquid iron she can take

He probably said that because he doesn't see her iron levels as that low. Personally if she is having a lot of heavy menstrual bleeding and does not have an iron rich diet, I would keep an eye on it and perhaps encourage to take some tablets.

Are you sure he said Floradix and not Feroglobin? The latter is liquid, OTC but has 14mg per 10ml dose so much more than either product mentioned in the op but not as much as high dose iron tablets.

That sounds more likely for someone who currently isn't diagnosed as anaemic.

I've used Feroglobin and it's good for maintenance of iron levels. For me personally.

I used to struggle taking tablets (I was the teenager asking for medication in liquid form Blush ) but at some point we all have to step up and do it. It might be a matter of simple technique, get her to make sure the tablet is right at the back of her tongue ready to go down the throat and then take a big decisive gulp of water.

TBH itshappening I'm just grateful she is taking anything

I'll talk to the guy on Wed & see where we go but realistically getting her to take the prescribed meds has been hard enough

I get so frustrated with her not looking after herself properly

Moving I agree that Spatone isn't the answer if someone has low iron stores. I tried it when I was anaemic, and had low ferritin, and while my haemoglobin level improved slightly over the 3 months between blood tests (on 2 sachets of spatone per day) my ferritin/stores didn't. It wasn't anywhere near enough to even start to replenish depleted stores.

Ferrous fumarate (300mg) tablets, twice a day, work well for me, but even they can be harsh on the stomach. Each tablet has about 100mg elemental iron. Even if you only absorb 10% of that (which I'm sure is less than I was told by my Dr., but lets go by Spatone's figures for this calculation) then that's 10mg per tablet, so 20mg per day in total. That equates to what they say you'll absorb from 10 Spatone sachets. That's a bit too pricey an option for me!!

Ferrograd C or Galfer C were the two brands the Consultant recommended.
