Help! What is an endiocrinologist?

Haven't been feeling tip top for six months. Periods have reduced to three days in duration and have become irratic, none then two in one month. Tired constantly, and have put on weight. Doctor has run all usual tests and came back clear. She has now referred me to an endiocrinologist? Any advise welcome.

They test things like hormones to look for a range of problems, like hyperactive thyroid etc

Endocrinology is the specialism that looks at the effects of hormones on the body, not just the sex hormones but also things like thyroid function.

whilst you are waiting for the referral appointment is there any chance that you could try a therapy like reflexology.

it works on the whole body and balances and harmonises. obviously it works particularly well with stress related conditions but additionally has good effect on the endocrine system and immune system.

maybe worth a try?

I have been having reflexology massage and while it has helped me cope on a personal level has not significantly changed the way i feel. I thought my G.P had tested thyroid function with a blood test?

did he/she explain the results? sometimes test results may be within the normal range or borderline with an underactive thyroid (compared to what's normal for you). But presumably a specialist would be able make further checks and rule it out for sure, or work out any appropriate treatment.

sorry, I just picked up on the 'tired and put on weight' which are symptoms of underactive thyroid, but it could be some other hormonal imbalance. Good luck with the endocrinologist appointment.

hi sharry,

has your reflexologist mentioned any imbalances that they may feel or have you noticed areas of sensitivity on your feet when they are being worked?

as muminlondon says, often blood tests go for the norm, which is not necessarily normal for you. i am sure the endocrinologist will be more informative.

best wishes
