Mirena Coil - Emotional nightmare !

Buffyfan123 · 12/04/2007 13:57

Hi, am new to mumsnet despite having two dd's ! Had a Mirena coil fitted 5 weeks ago and have been very emotional sine. Completely irrational levels of emotional - have developed headaches and every time I get one I start worrying about dying and not getting to see dd's grow up - then cry more ! See - totally irational, and completely not me. Am hoping it is down to the coil so I can get it removed and go back to being normal ! Has anyone else had this problem?

There are loads o fthreads on thi if you search under health!

Olihan · 12/04/2007 14:03

If you go to 'search all messages' at the top of the page and search for 'mirena coil' it comes up with masses of old threads. Lots and lots of people have had problems with it, I'm sure there'll be a few who have had the same as you .

Sounds like a nightmare for you, hope you get it sorted.

Daffodil beat me to it,

Meant to say welcome to MN too!

Thanks - I have already searched lots of threads - but there is so much on this and I couldn't find anything this specific - seems to be lots of general depression (and a scary number of pregnancies whilst the coil is fitted !)

Welcome to MN ! Do remember that people will tend to focus on negatives on those threads and that those who have a more positive experience may not post in representative numbers. It does not suit all women (what drug/pill does ?), particularly anyone who has previously had depression or is already sensitive to those hormones, in Pill or implant for example. It can take more than a month or so to settle down physically and for you to get used to the concept. For me the benefits outweigh negatives and I can't say I've had that particular experience with it, but it is very individual. hth

I do have the plus side of not having had any bleeding since it was fitted. Although there do seem to be people who love it - I have to say out of my group of 7 close mums 4 of us have had the mirena and all 4 of us have had varying problems. One friend had depression and had hers removed, but she also said she had depression on the pill. I never had probs with the pill and not a depressive person at all - went through a messy divorce with a cheating husband whilst I was pregnant with first dd and survived without a hint of depression, which is why I am surprised to have this side effect.

I'd get it taken out sounds like it is a bother. I use natural contraception which has so far worked as I don't react well to hormonal contraception. So far so good. My doctor actually recommended it when i asked for other means, he uses it himself too.. there are various methods, but it helps if you are regular..

HAd min removed as I was moody, spotty and sweaty. I also had a constant nagging pain in my lower abdomen.
It was nice not having periods, but I did used to worry I was pg!
Had mine out 4 weeks ago and feel much happier and lost 5lbs! Bonus!!
