A lack of regular smear tests is the most common contributing factor to why women develop cervical cancer, experts have said. Each year in the UK, almost 2,800 women are diagnosed with cervical cancer and more than 1,000 die from it. The authors of the study, writing in the journal BJOG, warned that half of women with cervical cancer involved in the research had not had a smear test in the three years before diagnosis.
