Mysterious disappearance of period.

Is there anyone who could give me some advice on the following. My menstrual cycle still hasn't made a comeback after giving birth 14 months ago. I'm breastfeeding, so assume that might have something to do with it. Is this quite normal, or should I be seeking medical advice? (and I'm definitely not pregnant).

Are you still breastfeeding at night?
It sounds like this is your normal.

Pimpinella · 17/10/2017 22:42

Yes, I am. Lots of night feeds, to say the least!

I' m just a bit worried in case my lack of estrogen levels could result in osteoporosis. I obviously don't know. Hmm

If you're still breastfeeding that can do it! Perfectly normal, don't freak out and enjoy the break!

Don't know how old you are but I was menopausal at 40. Periods stopped

Pimpinella · 18/10/2017 12:59

I'm 38. I was also wondering whether it was an early menopause, but both my mother and grandmother weren't menopausal until they were in their mid fifties, so.... How would I know whether it's the onset of the menopause?

I've never had a period while breastfeeding, but you still need contraception.

Amber0685 · 18/10/2017 15:20

Get your Prolactin level tested

Pimpinella · 18/10/2017 21:34

Ok, I might just go ahead and do that.

I was 32 and my periods stopped for 18 months while bfeeding.

Foggymist · 19/10/2017 00:00

Yeah it's not a mysterious disappearance at all, totally normal if still breastfeeding. Mine returned after 19 months of bf, a friend (who is 24) still doesn't have hers back and her ds is 2.5.

Pimpinella · 19/10/2017 16:04

Wow! I had no idea that bf could stop you from menstruating for such a long time. Not as clued up as I thought I was.

Thanks again for letting me know about this.

Wish mine disappeared for even half that long time when I was exclusively breastfeeding DS and multiple times at night too! I was on proper periods after 6 weeks!!

DancingHipposOnAcid · 22/10/2017 10:21

My periods stopped abruptly at age 41 due to menopause. My DM was really surprised as she didn’t get it until mid 50s, so you will not necessarily follow your family pattern.

I got a hormone test at the GP which confirmed menopause.

Strangely enough, it happened just after taking the morning after pill. Didn’t have another period after.

Pimpinella · 22/10/2017 21:58

Mmm...I suppose it wouldn't hurt to have one of those hormone tests. It just seems a bit strange as my period came back after 9 months with my first; she was bf exclusively for the first 6/7 months, well, actually, for the first year come to think of it! I think my body has already recognised an intense episode of breastfeeding, so it just seems a bit out of character to not go back to it's usual habits.

My period didn’t start until about 14 months after the birth, as I was ebf. Now expecting our second! I would wait until you’ve stopped breastfeeding, and if it doesn’t come back, then see about tests etc.

Pimpinella · 23/10/2017 22:32

Sound advice. Thank you.
