Does anyone recognise these symptoms in a 12 week old?

Please help wise MumsNetters! Sorry in advance for long post.
I'm worried about my DS who had been a happy and settled baby, feeding (breastfed) and gaining weight well. On Sunday night he was very difficult to settle and screamed for over an hour. Since then, he has been feeding well and does not have a high temperature or rash, but has got a bit of a snotty nose and there has been mucus in his sick. Today, he's screamed on and off all day and has sounded like he's in pain, a similar cry to when he has normal wind but much more intense and long-lasting. He's been sick several times, more frequently and more volume than ever before. He also seems to have a lot of wind that I'm having trouble helping him with.
I would have thought colic but my books say it gets better at 12 weeks, not starts? When does reflux usually appear? Or does it sound more like something I've eaten or drank? Had friends round last night and drank a full glass of red wine for the first time in a year, expecting to have a few hours before DS had next feed> He woke up hungry and I felt a tiny bit drunk when I fed him (hadn't got any EBM or formula) do you think it could be that? Sorry for long post!

I am sorry that I am not really able to help. If you are concerned and he is out of sorts it might be worth contacting NHS Direct and explaining his symptoms. He may have a stomach upset, but when they are this young it is worth being certain. Hope that he is ok!

Black- Agree with getting checked with NHS Direct but it is unlikely to have been the glass of wine. Do you have any infacol/gripe water you could try at his next feed?

coleyboy · 11/04/2007 20:31

I don't have any answers for you. But whenever ds has a cold, the mucus he produces makes him vomit.

I doubt it is colic or the wine, he's probably just under the weather with some bug or other.

If you're ever unsure, go to see the doc - that's what they're there for.

hanks Rantum. I normally phone NHS Direct at the first sign of any problems...my family reckon it's Speeddial Number 1 on my phone! Haven't done with this though because I know they'll say to take him to GP tomorrow, which I will, but in the meantime was wondering if there's anyting I can do for him overnight.

my dd had a cold at about 3 months and kept bringing his milk back up with mucous in it. She is better now though. Hopefully it is nothing to worry about but call gp if you are worried,

Thanks everyone for your speedy replies, sorry my second post crossed with chilledmama and coleyboy's. He's now fast asleep after his lovely Dad cuddled him for ages so fingers crossed he'll sleep and feed well tonight and wake up happier tomorrow. I'm off to bed myself now, unless I get too into Legally Blonde 2!! x

If he wakes, you could try propping his cot up with books under the legs to help with the snottiness and wind.

Elibean · 12/04/2007 09:29

Hope he's better today! Just in case he isn't: my dd2 (4 months) is the same. She does happen to have reflux, but its under control with meds and this, in her case, isn't about the reflux: she has a cold, and the snot (sorry, tmi coming up) runs down back of throat into stomach, and the bugs in it do nasty things to their tender little guts.

So (gp once told me this, and boy is she right) colds in babies often lead to upset tummies, wind, and pain

And a lot of interrupted nights for Mummies.

Agree with checking with NHS and/or GP, though - always wise with babies!

BlackCountryLass · 14/04/2007 20:09

Thanks Scootergirl and Elibean. He's still crying a lot (hence the very delayed reply, haven't had chance to type - been jigglng, swinging, cuddling etc!!) Couldn't get a GP appointment on Thursday, then he seemed better yesterday so I didn't ring but will take him on Monday if there's no improvement.
Still wondering about colic - everything I've read says that the onset of colic is earlier than this but my Mom came back from a holiday today and said he was behaving just like my brother did when he got colic at 3 months! He seems fine in between crying episodes, I just don't know what to think. They don't half keep you guessing do they, these babies!
