Does anyone have little red pinkprick bood spots on their body (petechie)?

DD3 has recently had a meningitis type pinprick rash which has an unknown cause. The rash was fairly diffuse and wasn't meningitis.

In trying to work out what might have caused it I did a bit of googling and found out that the spots may be called petechiae or purpura rash . A little bit of googling later and I find out that it can be caused by blood vessel or clotting problems as well as a number of other things. Now her rash has gone so I am not worried about her (nor is GP).

BUT

I have had a diffuse scattering of little red pinpricks across my lower arms for as long as I can remember (and a few elsewhere on my body. They are the same as the meningitis rash (which I didn't realise until I saw DDs) in that they don't disappear under pressure. They don't seem to disappear but they seem to get bigger in the hot weather.

Now I'm wondering should I be worried - that list of possible causes on wiki-pedia is quite worrying. On the other hand if you google images 'petechiae' you get some significantly more frightening images which I assume are the cases to be worried about.

So my question - Do you have these spots or am I abnormal?

I just noticed some of these coming up. Mine look like the picture, but slightly bigger and are on my upper torso. Mine seem to itch sometimes (at least one on my back does). Don't know if I should worry or not.

shonaspurtle · 11/04/2007 16:23

I've got quite a few. Mostly very tiny but a couple of bigger ones (maybe 2mm max) on my breasts.

I've got very fair, sensitive skin and I put it down to yet another of the annoying things about that.

JonesTheSteam · 11/04/2007 16:24

I've got a few on my shoulders - they seem to get bigger in hot weather too.

moyasmum · 11/04/2007 16:31

I have these too, so what are we saying,if it doesn't hurt us we ignore it?(Thats what iv'e been doing for years now).

SlightlyMadSlug · 11/04/2007 16:34

Well I've been ignoring it...I guess I am questioning whether that is right?

I think I will carry on ignoring it, but may mention it next time I am at the docs for soemthing else (give me a couple of years then?). UNLESS someone comes on an tells me that it is really serious and should be looked at of course.

I have them. I've had them for years and have mentioned them in passing to my GP.

He asked me if I drank more than the recommended number of units of alcohol. I don't (generally ).

I had full bloods done a couple of years ago for something unconnected and clotting was OK.

southeastastra · 11/04/2007 19:11

i've got them the dr said they could only be got rid of by laser.

Polgara2 · 11/04/2007 19:15

I've got lots of these little red dots too. When I asked the doc he called them McDougalls or McDonals or something like that anyway and said not to worry about them - so I don't! They increased in number after pregnancies too.

NoNickname · 11/04/2007 19:21

I have tons of them too - I was told they are Campbell de Morgan spots and were harmless. Have just Googled and found this BBC health page about Cempbell de Morgan spots

Snaf · 11/04/2007 19:24

You can often get them if you have your blood pressure taken a lot (i.e. during pregnancy) and the cuff is blown up too tight. I've got quite a few on my upper arms.

DrNortherner · 11/04/2007 19:25

I have 1 on my boob.

belgo · 11/04/2007 19:26

I gave myself a few of these by scratching too much in one areaon my leg. They were temporary.

summer111 · 11/04/2007 20:07

I saw a dermatalogist for a mole check a few months back and as I have loads of those pink spots, like little feckles on my body, asked him about them. He confirmed that they are perfectly harmless so don't fret!

Heartmum2Jamie · 11/04/2007 22:25

I have a few, just randomly dotted about, a few on my hands. My ds2 (2.9) has these alot, mainly on his trunk, but can also be on his legs or arms. He has been having them on and off for almost a year. Dr's don't seem concerned in the slightest

obimomkanobi · 12/04/2007 08:38

I have loads, but I also have a low platelet count.

I find that when I am a bit run down more appear.

obimomkanobi - is that part of an illness?

wurlywurly · 12/04/2007 08:56

I have a few of these, including a large one on my left nork. which i tried to drain before but it just kept filling back up.

obimomkanobi · 12/04/2007 14:24

Belgo, I've always had a low platelet count. It was picked up in my first pregnancy 'cos it was very low.

But tests after pregnancy indicated that my platelet count seems to be at the high end of low naturally.

They labeled it as 'idiopathic thrombocytopenia' but to be honest with you I think it's just the way I am.

I reckon I just have crap blood 'cos I am prone to anaemia too! I am a delicate flower.

I've got them all over, tiny little red pinpoints ,had them for at least 15 years, I think, I'm now 36.. and my mother and grandmother hsve (had) them too...I remember rudely commenting on my grandmother's when I was tiny. Must be an age thing..I remember grandma's got much worse in her old age.
