Vertical ridges in my nails

katymac · 14/10/2017 20:04

& they are quite brittle too

Dr Google is suggesting low iron - but I'm actually taking more iron and folic acid than I have ever taken before (found an iron that I can digest)

So could it be anything else? I hesitate to take more than the RDA of iron (unlike vit C etc which are water soluble)

I have had this for years with nothing ever shifting it or being found wrong with me. If it's anything, I think it's my dodgy digestion.

I do find that using a good nail oil helps a bit though.

withoutthelittledots · 14/10/2017 21:20

Do they run from side to side, or down the length of the nails?

katymac · 14/10/2017 21:23

Down the length

I have dodgy digestion too but they have got worse since I have been supplimenting (with all sorts)

Probiotics, yoghurt, sauerkraut and patience.

rizlett · 15/10/2017 13:42

Whilst it can be a sign of disease this also naturally happens as you get older too op. Filing the ridges will make your nails smoother of course.

missyB1 · 15/10/2017 13:46

I have them too but only on a couple of nails and they are very brittle as well.

BusterGonad · 15/10/2017 14:29

Oh I have this and I've got IBD, I never knew it was related!

LaCerbiatta · 15/10/2017 14:34

I have this and my iron is also on the low side. whic iron supplement have you found that you can digest? I can't get on with any :(

RavingRoo · 15/10/2017 14:35

Try drinking more water. Mine disappeared in a week after drinking 8 cups a day

KoolKoala07 · 15/10/2017 14:37

Do u suffer with dermatitis or eczema or ever used steroid cream? That can make nails ridgy.

katymac · 15/10/2017 19:19

LaCerbiatta floradix - but only sometimes, sometimes they pass through undigested

KoolKoala07 not for 10 years or so

rizlett refuse to allow that 49 could be considered old Wink

Puffpaw I'm dairy free

OK I'll just keep plodding along with the iron & hope I'm doing the right thing

Puffpaw · 15/10/2017 21:03

Ok, probiotics, kimchi, tempeh, and sauerkraut. All dairy free, all will improve your gut biome and all will improve digestion and absorption

LaCerbiatta · 15/10/2017 23:59

Thanks but sadly floradix doesn't agree with me at all - horrible, painful constipation:(

nooka · 16/10/2017 00:13

I have quite deep ridges in my thumbnails and none of my finger nails are completely smooth. They have always been a bit ridgy but have got worse these last few years. If I file them they snap really easily. I've always just thought it was how I was made, but I do have digestive problems (silent reflux mostly) which also started many years ago and have got worse more recently.

withoutthelittledots · 16/10/2017 00:25

I've had lengthwise ridges for a long time, and I was told that it was caused by damage to the nail bed. The damage to a small area causes the nail to grow at a different thickness to the bit beside it. I used to bite my nails as a kid, and at one time had a fairly manual job (farm-related) so I put it down to that in my case.
I don't have half-moons on my fingernails either - only on the thumbnails.

katymac · 16/10/2017 08:20

Do you take the liquid or the tablet?

I started about 18m ago on one tablet every third day, then every other day and around easter I moved to every day

No idea about the nails now - so confused!

Have you tried the Spatone? I find that, with orange juice, does get digested
