Snotty poos!

ds2 is 10weeks old and caught ds1's cold. No snotty nose, just lots of snotty poo(kharki, smelly and mucusy). This has been going on for a couple of weeks now, and I wondered if anyone with something similar can tell me how long its likely to go on for. He's seen the GP, who was fairly dismissive, and the HV who just siad that we would keep a check on his weight gain, but otherwise not to worry. He seems fine in himself, a little grizzly at times, but generally eating and sleeping well. Thank you!

This happened to our dd and it went on for weeks. we were advised to give plenty of fluids to help flush it out. At the same time our dd started to get a very gripey/colicky tummy which may or may not have been caused by the cold (g.p. says not, hv says yes.) Having said that, dd was otherwise well and happy and kept on the right line for her weight throughout.

ionesmum-is that "plenty of fluids" water or milk. ds2 is breastfed and is refusing to take anything from a bottle or cup. I've tried a little boiled water but without success. And how long is weeks? I thought things were finally getting better y'day with a more normal coloured poo, but it was back to the kharki, smelly stuff today. Does my diet have anything to do with it? Any ideas anyone?

Can't help with the breastfeeding as we had to bottle-feed dd. I can't think why your diet would affect things. Dd won't take water either, we just ended up giving her more milk, so perhaps you could increase your breastfeeds?(sorry, not a subject I know a lot about.) By weeks I suppose it was about five-six weeks - it was certainly a long time. It did tail off towards the end so it was only occaisional.

Honeybunny, if your ds is generally eating and sleeping well, I wouldn't worry at all. Especially if you are just breastfeeding. He will be getting just what he needs. My ds was exclusively breastfed until 6 months and his poo changed all the time (except that it was consistantly runny...normal for bfing). I can only assume that it varied with what I ate.

Thanks SofiaAmes, yes ds2 does appear to be feeding well, and continues to put on weight consistently. He's generally happy and contented, just hungrier than usual at the moment, ie not going as long between feeds. Perhaps he's having yet another growth spurt.
Ionesmum- 5-6weeks seems ages! Poos are still quite mucusy, but beginning to look more like a normal bf poo, a cross between carrot soup and grained mustard!! Hope this is the beginning of an improvement.

honeybunny - it was ages before the snotty poos went but to be honest our main concern was the gripey tummy, which may not have been caused by the snot anyway. I agree with Sofia Ames - the important thing is that your ds is eating and drinking well. And you have one massive advantage over me in that you are b/feeding, which is obviously better for your little one.

ionesmum- oh, please don't put me on that bf pedestal! I've just been really lucky this time. bf ds1 was a disaster, and we'd all but given up at this stage. ds2 has been much easier, a diligent little feeder, who's been content to bf for ages to get my milk flowing, unlike ds1! I know things havent gone well for you in the bf line, maybe (if you go down this path) next time will be better for you too. Anyway, thanks for your messages about the snotty poos. Over the past 48hrs ds2 has only produced one poo and its now back to normal. Big relief all round.
