29 weeks pregnant, tearing-hair-out type tooth ache

What are my options?
It's a tooth where the root is still in and has been for nearly a year. Had to go to OOH dentist at 16(?) weeks as had 2 infections including one in this "tooth" and had antibiotics. Said to go to my dentist for hospital referral but my dentist won't even do a non urgent appointment let alone a referral and tbh I have no confidence in her as she left the root in in the first place. No where else taking new patients on NHS, can't find anyone private to do referral that I can afford.
Tried paracetamol, heat, can't stand cold.
Help please!!!

My sister took a fairly high dose of codeine for the last month of her pregnancy and her baby is fine.

Neither you or the baby are likely to get addicted if you stick to the guidelines.

Go back to A&E in the morning and see another doctor.

Swilling your mouth with warm salty water might help too.

UnbornMortificado · 14/10/2017 09:44

What the fuck?

I was prescribed Oramoroph. I was also on AD's for the duration. Was under a consultant as well who ok'd it.

If men suffered through pregnancy and birth they'd have painkillers in the vending machines at hospital.

I'm sorry that was a really shitty thing to say to you AngryFlowers

Is there no way you could borrow the money to get a private dentist to take it out, or get a credit card? Lots offer initial 0% deals. It's so important to get this sorted for you.
Although I am astounded the NHS dentist isn't treating this at an emergency situation and squeezing you in!
The chances of a baby becoming tolerant to the codeine if you only took it for a matter of days are slim to none is my understanding (not that I'm a HCP). A baby becoming addicted is totally impossible.
Tolerance would be more of an issue if you were at the very end of your pregnancy, but even then lots of women are prescribed it for SPD for example. The scare mongering really annoys me, people should be given proper info so they can make an informed choice. You in pain and suffering lack of sleep, food, fluids etc. certainly isn't good for the baby! I really hope you get sorted very soon.

Christ woman, take a paracetamol!! Paracetamol and codeine are ok in mid pregnancy as a short term measure if it’s needed.
Don’t take ibuprofen or any other otc preparation.

I really hope you can see a dentist today.

Healthcare can be very anti-woman sometimes.

Thank you all for your support Smile

I managed to get 3 hours straight sleep last night though I'm not saying how I managed it in case that lovely doctor is on here.

This morning it phoned out-of-town dentist, can't see me as I'm registered at vile dentist. So I went to see vile dentist who took one look at my swollen jaw and just gave me anti biotics. So at least we're getting somewhere...
Since my nice long sleep, baby has settled to more normal movement patterns which is a relief. I also managed to eat half a weetabix with the aid of paracetamol! Last week they were concerned as my bump is small (baby is fine, it's how she's laying) and lack of weight gain on me and then not being able to eat for days...

Forgive me if I'm wrong but I always thought that I was the patient, not the baby, as the baby isn't actually a person until they're born? Not that I would do anything to harm the baby at all (in case any HCPs are reading) but, as you've said, it's my body and I really would prefer to make an informed choice than having my views overridden just because I'm pregnant...

I'm going to mention what the doctor said last night to my midwife to see if she thinks I should do anything.

Sorry if this is rambly and doesn't make much sense, the paracetamol is really wearing off and the trek to the dentist has made me tired...

You're making perfect sense, and I absolutely agree with you that you are the patient. I wouldn't be surprised if the midwife didn't agreed you should complain about the doctor, they often back each other up at all costs in my experience, understandably I suppose. I would seriously consider complaining though, I would make notes now, and make the complaint when you feel better.
Sometimes dentists won't give treatment when there's a current infection, instead waiting for antibiotics to take effect. Thank god they've at least given you them now. I hope you manage to get some sleep, and some more food inside you.

AuldHeathen · 14/10/2017 21:43

Hello, OP. I’m back on after a few busy days. Quite frankly l am shocked by what’s been happening. I hope the infection is settling now you’re on antibiotics, and that you’re managing rest and some drinks at least. In a situation where a pregnant woman can’t eat for several days, some of those build up drinks might help. I wonder if you could make your own smoothie-type drinks and at least get some vitamins in?

Shocked by the doctor. Was she terribly young?! It’s quite weird stuff to be saying. You should, if you want, write it down and tell someone. PALS maybe? I’m surprised by you not being able to go to the other dentist. Can’t you just say you’re transferring over? Is the first dentist seeing you again once you’ve had the A/Bs? I presume so.

AuldHeathen · 14/10/2017 21:45

I thought that too, never. There is a possibility the midwife will back the doctor, but there are lots of midwives who would see it your way, OP.

BabyOrSanta · 14/10/2017 22:01

Luckily my other half was there otherwise I think I would have thought I had some sort of pain-induced paranoia and was hearing things.
She was about 35-40 I would say but I'm really rubbish with ages.
My midwife is usually on my side and has put my mind at rest about things in the past so I'm hoping she will be an okayish sounding board (for reference, she's been in the job forever and knows what a cack pregnancy I've had).

I'm hoping the antibiotics kick in sooner rather than later but at least I have something now... they've also agreed to refer me in January, after birth. The previous OOH dentist told me to expect the infection to come back every two months or so until I have the root taken out and I really should have listened to him. But what can you do when no one is taking on and your current dentist won't do it? Going private is an option but it would mean adding more to the considerable debts I've got.

I've managed some biscuits and more Vimto which is something and am definitely feeling better than I did. I felt so poorly with lack of sleep and not being able to fully quench my thirst without hitting the ceiling and the paracetamol is taking more of the edge off along with the heat patches so I'm hoping to be able to eat a proper meal tomorrow which will be a treat! Who knew that one stupid root could make beans on toast sound delicious?! Although I am going to take it steady as I'm guessing my stomach may have shrunk and I really can't deal with being sick right now...

Thank you, as always, for your support Smile

I really think this is worth adding to your debt, I also think it's really out of order that you're having to consider that option though.
I can't remember what they're called but there is a list held in all areas I think, of people on waiting lists for a dentist. If you could contact them they may be able to give you the name of an NHS dentist further afield that is taking new patients.
I've been told in the past when waiting for an infection to reduce so I could have treatment, that it's really important to keep that area clean. So brushing well and often where the infection is, even if it's painful to do.
