Has anyone else's child had Molluscum?

My DS1 has it at the moment, and has done for
a while now. He has quite a lot of spots, which are red and angry looking, and itch. DS2 had it last year, but not as bad, and at the same time he had impetigo which he was given antibiotics for. Interestingly, after the antibiotics, the molluscum cleared up. However, the Dr. says that nothing can treat it, so won't prescribe anything for it. DH and I researched it on the internet and found a homeopathic treatment called ZymaDerm (or something like that.) We've ordered some and are going to give it a try, as DS starts a swimming course next month with school and I'd like to clear it up before then if I can.

Just wondered if anyone else has experienced Molluscum and whether they treated it with anything.

if they're red and angry they're on the way out and will be gone in a couple of weeks

Twiglett · 10/04/2007 16:27

is the homeopathic treatment a brand name for Thuja because that's the only homeopathic I've heard that workds .. but there is a lot of snake oil out there

GP is right about the anti-b's though

gess · 10/04/2007 16:27

ds3 had loads- homeopathy (a standard remedy though) did clear one batch and the final batch. Finally went after chickeponx iirc.

GooseyLoosey · 10/04/2007 16:29

No suggestions but really interested to see if anyone has any ideas about how to treat it too as half the children I know at the moment have it!

Ds has it and a lot of the "spots" are quite inflamed. We were prescribed steroid cream to deal with the inflamation - don't like using it so have not really bothered. GP, like yours, said nothing would deal with the lumps. Not sure antibiotics would work as it is viral (I think).

hannahsaunt · 10/04/2007 16:31

Both mine have though ds1 much less so. Neither appear bothered at all atm so haven't done much for it yet.

Did you also use Thuja, Gess?

DS has have them for more of a year, they spread a couple of months ago to the edge of the eyelid.

I have no idea how and when he got them as they started as a couple of tiny spots in his hand but he is going to swimming classes (the school told me it was OK to take him) but I have this slight guilty feeling by doing so.

Troutpout · 10/04/2007 16:43

mmm yes...the gp wouldn't said there was nothing available when ds had it too. He was just given antibiotic cream when it got infected. It took about a year- 16 months to go. Twigletts right in that they get red and angry before they go...but this stage lasted quite a while for us.
A friend of mine who lives in the states was given Imiquimod (Aldera) cream for her child as soon as she spotted them...and it cleared up really quickly ...i think her child only had the problem for a couple of weeks. I guess eventually it will be available here.

bundle · 10/04/2007 16:45

I have some Imiquimod for dd2 and although we've only applied it twice it does seem to have almost eradicated them. it's the same treatment that's used on eg genital warts

elasticbandstand · 10/04/2007 16:46

gp said it was ok to go swimming and carry on... they disappeared in the end

Troutpout · 10/04/2007 16:46

Are you in the states Bundle?

My 2 ds had it and after consulting a MN thread and following the advice given we shifted it after 3 weeks.

This is what we did;

Changed pyjamas every night to prevent spread of spots
Used clean towels each night
Bathed every night in a bath containing warm water,2 drops tea tree oil, 2 drops lavender oil and a cup of Tidman's sea salts
2 Thuja pills each day
Applied Elizabeth Arden 8 hour cream to each spot

My Gp said there was nothing you could do but let it run it's course. Our dss had it for about 8 months and we did leave it until ds2 got one on his face and realised he may be scarred if we didn't try anything. A friend has got rid of it for her 2 dc using the same treatment. Good luck!!!

HotCrossPenguin · 10/04/2007 18:24

Yes, the treatment we've ordered does have Thuja as one of the ingredients. Also Ecinacea (I probably haven't spelt that right, but you know what I mean.)

Looking on the net, there are loads of treatments you can get in the States. Some of the pictures were horrific, it can get really bad.

Interesting that it may clear up soon if the spots are red and angry, hope so, but like another poster, they've been like this for a while.

dd3 has an outbreak on her leg atm. i think it may be the dreaded molluscum. she has had ezcema on her legs recently. they are smal land red.

Gobbledigook · 10/04/2007 18:28

Ds1 has had them for about a year now. The original ones became red and inflammed and they disappeared but then a few more cropped up and he still has them. They are on his torso though so they aren't really spreading anywhere else as they are mostly covered.

Ds3 got one on the bridge of his nose but it disappeared after a couple of months.

Poor ds1! Mind you, they don't seem to bother him.

We haven't treated them at all.

bundle · 11/04/2007 09:41

troutpout, no I'm in London. our GP said it was a bit of a last resort treatment - it only works in around 40% of cases iirc but I wanted to have a go because dd2 was so troubled by the molloscum recently
