I'm not giving up, oh no! A few months ago, there was a thread about colds breaking childrens sleep etc. Several mumsnetters mentioned a medicine that was apparently much better than calpol, was it called dozol, or is that just wishful thinking :#. Ds is teething and is immune (practically) to calpol. Any other suggestions?

Medised has a sedative effect because it contains an anti-histamine and it is intended for use as a cold remedy. It isn't a miracle knock out potion though and only seems to work for a limited time. My pharmacist always gives me the third degree when I ask for a bottle, I think she thinks that I misuse it. A bottle doesn't last long though as it only contains 140 ml which you give in 10ml or 20 ml doses depending on the age of the child.

We aren't having too many sleep problems at the moment (fingers, toes and legs crossed) except for the early starts but I'd like to know more about Dozol - is it available in the UK and what age range is it suitable for?

WideWebWitch · 27/06/2002 09:47

Dozol is mentioned on this thread

Manna - I have a feeling Medised should not be given to children under one. Have you tried any other teething remedies such as the teething powders you get at the chemist. Be careful that there is not another reason for the upset nights such as an ear infection. Teething gets blamed for a lot of things - there are professionals out there who do not believe that it causes such major problems.

Medidsed is for under 2's, I'm fairly certain of that as my dd had it just after 2nd birthday. Have you tried Infant Neurofen for teething, it's Ibruprofen based and seems to act faster and for longer than Calpol. Or did you do the Dozol thing?!

PamT · 01/07/2002 21:29

I've just looked on my bottle of Medised and it says that it should not be given to under 2s except on a doctor's advice. Sorry!

You can now get Medised for babies, 3 months plus!

Patttsy2001 · 01/07/2002 22:11

The versions of Medised for under 3 months have been withdraw, as far as I know.

No, you can still buy Medised and Dozol from chemists (or at least you certainly could a couple of months ago) - they contain baby paracetamol plus an antihistamine which is a mild sedative and helped us get a little more sleep from time to time. Got mine from Superdrug but Boots do them too. Harmless and doesn't taste too bad either (compared to evil Calpol, which my son can't stand)

aloha · 01/07/2002 23:25

Both suitable from 3months, BTW

thanks for all your advice - we just upped the calpol - I didn't realise I'd been giving him 2.5ml in a syringe, whereas you can give up to 5ml. The trouble is that now he's waking anyway, but not from teething, oh well........

I have noted names of both medicines for next time, though
