Article seems to be from 2014, even so it's likely to be more in line with actual science rather than what Prohibitionists are promoting.
And no, the recent change in guidelines for alcohol consumption in males was not reduced to 14 units per week because of any cancer risk, it was because anti alcohol, pro abstinence zealots had an input.

RaininSummer · 04/10/2017 23:21

I get sozzled on two glasses of wine so usually just have a small one with dinner if at all. Apart from health and calories, I couldn't imagine spending at least forty quid a week on booze and that would be the cheap stuff.

Observational studies consistently show that teetotallers have worse life expectancy than people who drink in moderation.

However there are other differences that may explain this - the teetotallers may be poorer - they may be recovering alcoholics - they may be on medication for other health issues that prevent them drinking.

Or it may be a genuine effect - alcohol can help with heart and stroke risk in very moderate quantities, and heart and stroke are such huge killers that even small benefits can outweigh the negative effects on eg cancer risk.

People who are teetotal may be loners who don't socialise (which is another risk for lower life expectancy.) Drinking is often a social activity. You can't take stats like this in isolation.

I can drink a bottle of prosecco a night and feel ok the next day. Any more and I'd be hung over. And if I had stronger wine (the prosecco is 10.5-11 percent) I couldn't drink as much. However I'm aware this is still unhealthy, and I wouldn't do it every night (weight gain and money as well as the health stuff!)

This article is so dangerous to people like myself (a recovering alcoholic). It i unbelievably irresponsible to publish it. Although af for some time, the desire/skewed justification for drinking doesn't disappear and articles like this give the green light to start up again

I used to knock a bottle back in an evening. It made me feel shite. So I stopped and now I no longer feel shite.
