I am in pain with 2 or 3 sore lower molars. I can feel referred pain in my jaw a it and in my ear. have had it on and off for months but went to dentist as I couldn't sleep with it last night. Hex rayed and is mystified. They are teeth without fillings and they appear to be fine.

He's given me Metronizadole but as he doesn't know what's wrong, I don't know if I should take it. I also don't like the sound of it from reviews I've read.
What shall I do?? Might go to gp tomorrow. Could it actually be referred pain from jaw to teeth which is why teeth seem fine.

I have bruxism which was caused by my antidepressents. I don't grind my teeth, I clench my jaw. This means I often have massive pain in my back molars and yet there is nothing wrong with them.

Perhaps you are doing the same. DO you wake up with headaches?

Yvetteballs · 03/10/2017 19:42

Thanks for your reply becotide. Dentist asked if I grind my teeth. I don't know, may be I do, but it's been hours since my last sleep and I've got sore gums and a referred pain feeling in my jaw and ear.

This is probably crazy and way off, but I am allergic to some lipsticks: they make my teeth ache, I can find no other way to describe the pain. Have you been using a different lipstick at all lately?

Mum2lots · 03/10/2017 19:54

I think a lack of b12 can cause this x

lovemylover · 03/10/2017 21:23

Sometimes sinus infections can cause pain in gums and teeth,
I had this problem and went to the dentist,he said go to Dr and check sinuses, i did and had ABs it cleard

LivingInMidnight · 03/10/2017 22:07

I have TMJ disorder and often feel like I have toothache. It's not just at night, I clench in the day too. It's worse at work.

LivingInMidnight · 03/10/2017 22:08

Oh and my gums get sore too. Like I've been clenching a fruit gum between my teeth. Not sure how else to describe it!

daisychicken · 03/10/2017 22:13

I have molar pain, both upper and lower plus pain in the joint and I get headaches. It took me ages to realise that I'm clenching my teeth when I sleep. I'd seen my dentist, she couldn't see any signs on my teeth nor did x-ray show anything. In my case, chronic pain is the cause. I have a mouth guard to wear when I sleep which does help a bit.

llangennith · 03/10/2017 22:20

Go to the doctor and get antibiotics for a sinus infection.

Yvetteballs · 03/10/2017 22:49

Thanks all. I will try and get a gp appt tomorrow.

I get tension in my neck and lower part of my head at the back which causes pain in my face, jaw and/or teeth. Massaging the area firmly helps relieve it.

MiniMum97 · 04/10/2017 00:05

I also clench!

MiniMum97 · 04/10/2017 00:07

Could it be teeth sensitivity (porous teeth). I had terrible trouble with sensitive teeth and had to keep using very high fluoride toothpaste (which did work temporarily). Have found that following supplementing with vit D3 and K2 the sensitivity has resolved itself.

User843022 · 04/10/2017 10:50

I second MiniMums advice. I had this a couple of years ago, severe pain aching gums, teeth and jaw. I'd had sensitive teeth before but this felt much worse not that sharp pain you get with sensitivity.

Anyway, dentist did x-rays and like yours was baffled. He said try sensodyne (the proenamel one) but wasn't convinced it would work.
Anyway 2 weeks late it was fine! I used it between teeth cleaning too, applied to the base of the tooth with a cotton bud and the porous enamel just seemed to get plugged up.

Ginmakesitallok · 04/10/2017 10:53

I had similar problems when my wisdom teeth decided to erupt a bit more and made my bite odd and pushed on other teeth. Dentist initially said nothing wrong. When I went back I had wisdom tooth removed- problem solved.

delilahbucket · 04/10/2017 10:54

Neck tension causes pain to refer into my head and teeth. Migraines also cause my teeth to hurt. The teeth grinding thing is also key and you would need to try a mouth guard (made by your dentist) worn at night so you could eliminate this.

Lostlou · 04/10/2017 11:09

I am with LivingInMidnight and delilahbucket on this one.

If your dentist can't see anything obvious then it could well be TMJ and/or your trigeminal nerve.

I get cracking hormonal migraines (the last one lasted 16 days!) and when they first start I don't get aura but all my teeth hurt. It' like I can feel the nerves running across my top and bottom jaw and every tooth root. It's a horrid sensation. My sinuses also hurt and it makes my nose run as if I'm getting a cold. I think the face aching is like trigeminal neuralgia.

Have a Google (try starting here www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Trigeminal-neuralgia/Pages/Diagnosis.aspx) and see if anything 'clicks' with what you're experiencing. Very low night-time dose of amitriptyline (an old style tricyclic antidepressant) stopped mine completely.

You said it's 'on and off for months' I don't know your age so sorry if this is an indelicate question but is the 'on and off' linked to your menstrual cycle? Have you tried to see if their is a pattern?

Good luck with this and let us know how it goes.

Yvetteballs · 04/10/2017 14:40

Thank you for new replies everyone. I went to gp this morning, who said she thought it must be a dental issue: no obvious issue with glands, sinuses and ears. I’m going to start the antibiotic just in case it is an infection, but will get some aensodyne as well.
So wish me luck for 10 days without wineSmile.

I had something similar that went on for months Sad I had multiple X-rays at the dentist that showed nothing.
I was lucky enough to work with maxillo facial surgeons who did a 'proper' OPG X-ray (at hospital rather than the tiny dentists one) and I had a big fuck off pocket down the side of one tooth all the way to my jawbone.
I needed antibiotics and several surgeries, but it would never have been picked up at the dental surgery alone.
Chances are yours is a sneaky infection, but just to let you know, there are other causes.
Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Yvetteballs · 04/10/2017 15:07

Thanks Feral. I wonder how I could get referred for that.

Sounds like TMJ pain, sympathies ,it's horrible but excercises help.

Deedoo · 17/09/2023 16:50

@FeralBeryl was it at the end of a wisdom tooth by any chance
