Operation to remove haemorrhoids - anyone???!!

DH has finally been seen by a specialist - turns out he's got hemorrhoids stage 3.... and they're so big he might need an operation to remove them, under general anaesthetic?!

I have googled and searched on mumsnet, everyone is talking about using cream and suppositories, but no-one has mentioned ever being operated for it....

Any first-hand experience here?

DH is mortified, scared and unhappy about it.... trying to cheer him up.... (I don't mind, he did have to wipe my bottom during birth after all, lol).

Yep, my husband has had 2 operations and he still has them!
He is a very unlucky case though, he went to see another consultant only the other day who said that the removal normally has a 90% success rate. He is now waiting for ligation, basically they will burn and close off the blood vessels that supply the piles.
My husband has had them for many years and he is so bad that the constant bleeding has resulted in severe anaemia, and he had to have a transfusion a couple of months back. DH is 37 and apparently piles are very common in men around this age.
The first op he had was banding, which didn’t work. Then he had removal, I’m sorry to say it was very painful afterwards for about a week/10 days so time off work is a must.
We have been through this all so if you have any questions let me know. Xx

He could be getting them banded or completely removed. Seriously so common he shouldn't be feeling anything but relief !! because once they fix them surgically he will have some normality. Honestly it's so common nowadays so tell him to look forward to a week of recovering (if he can lol) once he has a date get him a game for the pc or playstation. That's what I would do for my DH.

My DH had banding which didn't work and then the stapling surgery done privately 3.5 years ago. He still has episodes of major bleeding and im really worried but he doesn't want more intervention Sad

I had my haemorrhoids handed (at the ripe old age of 24!) and it hasn't really worked, a friend's DH has had an operation and said recovery took a few weeks but sorted him out.

Banded

I had mine done a few years ago. Operation itself was fine and early recovery good. The pain kicked in after a couple of days and without spoiling anyone’s breakfast, going to the loo for a number 2 was the most painful thing I’ve ever experienced (2 children). It was like shitting glass. All sorted now though and glad I had it done.

Wow so good, thank you so much for the wealth of experience here!! of fantastic, can't wait to show him the thread (the power of Mumsnet, once again...).

Unhingetoday - yes I might PM you. Thank you so much for offering.

So all in all, it sounds like this is, if painful, common... Redken - excellent idea.

I can't believe it's taken him so long to tell me all about it.... He was giving me snippets of information... but when he came back yesterday from the hospital, it was as if the floodgates had been open....

Anyhow, thank yoooou all.

DH had his banded and it took 6 months to recover fully. They still come back from time to time but he manages them with Anusol cream and suppositories.
