Tonsillectomy on Tuesday :( Any experiences or tips?

Well, after years of begging, my tonsils are finally coming out on Tuesday, at the grand old age of 23. I know it's going to hurt, but I also know that it's necessary, as I get tonsillitus so frequently. Do any of you have experience of having this operation as an adult, and do you have any advice on how to make the first few days afterwards more bearable?

I had mine out when was about 22
It felt like I had a really bad case of tonsillitus. Felt knackered from the anaesthetic too for about a week.
I can remember eating a lot of crisp sanwiches afterwards!

crisp sandwiches I was counting on lots of jelly and ice cream!

Had mine out in mid 20s. Agony for a few days, although I was back at work full time the week afterwards instead of the 2 weeks theyu'd told me I'd be off. In fact, I had them out on the Tuesday and went to a course on the Thursday!

You need to eat toast and crisps as soon after as possible to help the healing process as opposed to soft, mushy foods which don't help so much. Drink lots of fluids.

As I said, it is agony, but taking strong painkillers regularly keeps the pain at bay. I remember the worst time for me was when I woke up in the morning, as your throat tends to be dry anyway, and the painkillers have worn off from the night before.

Even though it hurts it is well worth it - I was also suffering horrible bouts of tonsilitis that were ruining my life, but now, no more!

I had mine out in my early twenties too. I found gargling with soluble aspirin helped most as it acts as a local anaesthetic as well. It is not a good idea to go to work too early (or to places where you will mix with a lot of people) because of the risk of infection-or that is what I was told.
Good luck-it is not pleasant but as has been said, the health benefits make it worthwhile,

Take your painkillers!!!!!!
You have to eat toast to encourage healing, they actually tie a string around them and then burn them off. The scabs needs to be moved daily by eating. It is also beneficial in the sense that your throat muscles gets little tight and they need the exercise.

Good Luck, it is only sore for about a week, steer clear from curries and bananas, they tend to burn your throat!
