Yes, as you said halve the dose.
Because my 2 had febrile convulsions, the hospital advise me to dose on weight rather than age anyway.

vixma · 08/04/2007 00:32

I would not recommend it a a parent and a nanny just incase of later probs as it is a stronger dose, if concerned contact NHS online 08454647 who give cool advice. It is a short number but they are ok.

Half the dose is fine. My GP said she does this with her own children. Saves buying 2 different types

I wouldn't give 6+ to a 2 year old.
I do give meds depending on weight rather than age of child.

Peridot30 · 08/04/2007 00:43

Definately half the dose. If i was stuck i would probably just give the full dose.

The Childrens A&E department at our local hospital told me it was fine as well.

Ellbell · 08/04/2007 10:25

When my dd was 3 she fell over and cut her lip open. It needed stitching under general anaesthetic, so a nasty cut. The hospital gave her 6+ calpol and gave me a bottle to bring home, telling me to give her the full dose as often as she needed it if she was in pain.

I know she was 3, not 2, but I am sure that a half-dose would be fine for a 2-year-old as an emergency measure.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 08/04/2007 12:35

2m+ calpol has 120mg paracetamol in 5ml
6yr+ calpol has 250mg paracetamol in 5ml

The dose of 2m+ for 1-6years is 5-10ml
Therefore the equivalent dose of 6yrs plus for a 1-6yr old is 2.5-5ml (or 2.4-4.8ml if you are being pedantic). As others have said it is more important to base on weight but being on teh younger end of hte age scale I would probably give 2.5-3ml.

thanks s.m.s.b. i had the dregs of some 3m+calpol which is 120mg/5ml and a brand new bottle of 6+ paracetomol susp. which was 250mg/5ml so logically it seemed ok but for some reason i felt i needed reassurance. . . my kids are very rarely ill but if they are it always seems to be at weekend or bank holiday or when dp is at work so can't get to chemist !! Poor little one is really burning up but fast asleep so i hope he'll just sleep off whatever is wrong with him and be better tomorrow
