Wet combing with a nitty gritty comb every 2-3 days is effective. No chemicals involved.

Also tell school/childcare provider. They are probably catching them from someone else, go back clear and then cathc them from the same person time and time again. You must tell them so they can inform the other parents and hopefully they can all be treated reducing the risk of them bringing them home again.

i think whats happening is youre not getting all the eggs, so after a few days, they hatch, and your back to ssquare one.
continue with the combing. i have always done it with conditioner in, but you will need to do perhaps continuously for a week?

also, nyone who can have it done, sshave their hair off. no hair, no nits. i shaved ds2's head when he was 11 months old as wssnt having any luck with combing, and he wass seriously infested. they disapperred..

or there is the old fashioned way where you pick the nits out of the hair individully and squish between your nails. takes forever, but is chemicl free.

You must just wet comb with conditioner every 3 days for at least 2 weeks or for as long as it takes to find no new lice

There isn't any other reliable way of getting rid of them

You need to break the cycle and the only way to do that is to comb effectively and thoroughly every 3 days for AT LEAST two weeks (longer if you are not getting every single louse out each time)

FrannyandZooey · 07/04/2007 23:21

you don't have to get the eggs out, just comb out the small lice before they get big enough to lay eggs themselves

this is why it takes two weeks, for the tiny ones which will be hatching out at first, to reach be big enough to be combed out

Depends how long your hair is and how good your technique is

I find it impossible to do a good job on my (long, thick) hair

bribe a friend to help you with it and promise to help her out when the need should arise

Oh , use a lot of conditioner on the hair and leave on as you comb (this stops them running to another part of the head), clean the comb after every sweep of the comb, go from root to end and divide the hair into sections so you are thoroughly combing every part

have you a good comb? Nitty gritty is the one we all seem to rate on here

HTH

A friend recommended the following: just before bed, comb dc hair very thoroughly with nit comb. Slather your dc hair with mayonaise - apply very thick layer. Put dc to bed wearing a shower cap, or wrap their head with cling film (seriously!). Put a large bath towel over the pillow and upper part of the bed to protect pillows/bedding from stray mayo! Wake up in the morning and go straight into the bath. Wash hair several times to get mayo out. Use nit comb again when hair is wet.

It worked for us. Maybe it will for you and your dc too.

Yes oil or oily products will work by suffocating the lice, but you will still have to comb them out and repeat approx every 3 days

I think wet combing with conditioner is easier and less unpleasant

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 07/04/2007 23:33

I rinse my comb in a pint glass of water after every stroke. I then let the products settle for at least 10 mins after I have combed and then I can see the blighters in the bottom.

I comb every 2nd/3rd day until until at least 2 weeks have passed and I have had at least 2 consecutive clear glasses.

Nitty gritty does work to get the eggs out if you are thorough. A couple of weeks ago DTD2 had 1 louse and about 12-18 eggs (unhatched). 2 days later I got another 6-8 eggs (unhatched). 2 days later I got 1 (unhatched) egg and 1 baby louse. I got nothing for the rest of hte 2 week period.

Getting hte eggs out is so much better than waiting for them to hatch and crawling round making them itch.

HunieBuniesBack · 07/04/2007 23:33

Ohh, I will try the mayo next time my DCs get lice (God forfend!)

christywhisty · 07/04/2007 23:58

My daughter has just had a bad patch from September until February and I found I was using the wrong comb, it was a plastic comb.

Finally gave in and bought full marks solution, but never bothered using the solution itself but the comb it came with was brilliant. I either dry combed or wet combed every day for 2 weeks and the little blighter finally went

Waste of good vodka IMO!!!

FrannyandZooey · 08/04/2007 13:42

No product - chemical or natural or mayo or vodka or whatever - is going to kill ALL the lice on your head AND all the unhatched lice in the eggs

so you are going to have to apply any treatment at least twice, if not many times

and each time you are going to have to comb to get all the dead lice out

and you are probably going to get a few resistant ones and in a few weeks time you will all be crawling again.

The ONLY reliable way to get rid of all of the lice and unhatched lice on a head is to wet comb with conditioner and a good nit comb, very thoroughly, every 3 days for at least 2 weeks or continuing until all lice are gone (ie if you have missed a few on earlier combings and they have laid further eggs)

That means approx 5 good combing sessions in total to get rid of the whole lot, as opposed to 2 combing sessions and then the whole thing starting up again in a few weeks, with chemicals. Save yourself the hassle and just do decent combing every 3 days.

SlightlyMadSpringBunny · 08/04/2007 17:38

I agree with Franny. Well said.

Even tho the nitty gritty is supposed to remove and/or destroy live eggs I don't trust it to be 100% effective and still comb for a minimum of 2 weeks.

kimiTheEasterBunny · 08/04/2007 17:59

Not read whole the whole thing but try tea tree . works a treat.

charliecat · 08/04/2007 18:03

Yep, stock up on cheap conditioner and keep combing.
Every 2-3 days.
Forever. Till they arent in a class where someone, somewhere is always crawling.
