Going jogging 2mro for first time, REALLY nervous

I'm going jogging tomorrow for the first time with some friends. I've never jogged in my life but they've run marathons/races for the past few years. The only common ground that we all have is that we've all had babies last year so they haven't jogged in almost a year.

But I'm still really nervous, I can never get the breathing right and my legs go really wobbly. And I mean really wobbly, like I'm going to collapse. Plus I'm heavier than all of them, they're skinny minnies and I'm very much so not!

I'm going to head out in a minute to see how far I can go but I'm not holding out much hope.

Has anyone any suggestions that might help me to not pass out? Should I jog for a few minutes, then walk? Or walk half way and then try to jog back? We're doing a pier, it's not terribly long but I walked it last night and it was long enough! I do walk a ridiculous amount every day if that helps?

HELP!!!

No suggestions but just wanted to say good for you. I would love to start running to too scared evryone will be looking at me You just go for it, you can only do your best.

Oh thank you! I'm also nervous about all the people staring! All the flab and boobage... The pier is really popular for strolling on, though there are always plenty of joggers too.

I'm definitely going to get dressed now and head down there, but will have to bring DD in the buggy as DP is gone off for the day playing guitar with a friend (bloody hippy!)

Flowermum - good on you.

Don't start off too fast, that's the usual beginners mistake, try to go really slowly at first sort of at that point where a fast walk breaks into a run.

Breathing - supposedly you are suppose to breath in through your nose and out through your mouth. I can't do that. I mouth breathe, just try to get enough breath whichever way is best for you. Generally I count my breaths when I'm struggling and try to count 4 in and 4 out, usually I end up 3 in 4 out.

Don't be afraid to walk if you need to but try to keep moving one way or another. Set off again when you get you breath back.

Your running friends will have loads of good tips if they've run in the past. Good luck!

Flowermum...ME TOO!!!! I am doing race for life and am incredibly unfit. Am doing my training alone tho because i run like phoebe from friends(and i am NOT kidding!)

the race for life web page has some training tips on (i think you can get them withouit signing up) which are great for non runners and runners alike

I've just signed up for a 10k run and found this article on Runner's World, it has some useful tips for starting off

mainly to do a mixture of running and walking to start with.

Im starting running for the first time on Monday. Not looking forward to it at all but once ive done it a few times im sure i; get into it.

Hello mumofmonsters hope your doin ok xxx

Right well I'm back from my "jog" and I have to say I don't think I'll be able for tomorrow. I suppose a lot of it was to do with trying to push the buggy on gravel (why there's gravel on the pier, I don't know!) but it was SUPER hard. And hot!

MrsWednesday thanks for that link. I was trying to jog for 3mins and then walk for 6ish, which was fine at the start but I only did a few. I think it may have been too long, that link says aim for 20mins and I was gone for an hour.. That does include stoppage time for adjusting the umbrella on the buggy and nose blowing though.

Mumofmonsters, good on you signing up for a race! I reckon if I wasn't holding onto the buggy I'd have been like Phoebe too!

Actually I don't feel too bad now, tired but ok. Maybe I might go tomorrow but just do a bit of the pier, ten mins out and ten back perhaps?

20 mins sounds ideal to start with - I started off doing this but could only run for a minute at a time . Eventually worked up to 20-25 mins running (or lurching) which was dieal for me. Need to start again...

Flowermum · 07/04/2007 14:54

Good stuff. I'll aim for twenty so. And maybe have Dp at the end with the oxygen...

The reason we're starting jogging is because they want to do the Dublin Womens Mini-Marathon in June. I'll never be able to jog that but I'll definitely walk it, though it'll probably take me all day! When they suggested starting training my response went something along the lines of "Aha! A ha ha ha ha ha!!!"

Still felt like crying at the end of the pier after my dismal experience but I feel a bit more positive now!3

an hour sounds ages!

wish you were nearer me - I want to start running but am absolutely useless. Far too many wobbly bits that hamper any aerodynamic features the human body is supposed to have.

A few of my friends want me to do a mini-triathlon with them later this year but even though I don't think I'm that unfit, I can barely run round the corner!

I also get that 'going to pass out' feeling! Keep posting on here because I'd love to hear how you get on.

Flowermum · 07/04/2007 16:20

Well now keep in mind that my hour started out jogging and ended up in a brisk walk!

A mini-triathlon sounds mad! is that swimming, cycling and running? Bloody hell! I also could not run round the corner! And would sink if I tried to swim!
