Mouth ulcers

Shadowboy · 24/09/2017 21:41

I suffer badly (really badly!) from mouth ulcers. I currently have 6. I rarely go one month without at least one. They are big and very painful.

I think it's anxiety/stress that causes it but I can't be sure. My nails/skin and hair are all fine- nails I am especially proud off!

Do any of you who suffer have any tips? They are starting to affect my work as I'm I currently finding this 'set' are in places where it affects my speech.

Any ideas?

Have you been checked for anaemia (iron deficiency), pernicious anaemia (B12/folate deficiency) or coeliac (gluten allergy)? Ulcers are often brought on by stress, but can also be due to an undiagnosed underlying cause.

Hi I'm a dental hygienist and get loads... and I mean loads of patients who suffer with them. Plus it's crops of them not just the odd one.
I also suffer terribly and assumed it was probably tiredness and possibly hormones. However I've changed my toothpaste to SLS free (sodium laryl sulphate). It's basically the foaming agent in toothpastes. All Colgate/oralB etc contain it. Change to sensodyne (just not the complete care as that contains SLS). I now rarely get them and if I do it's the odd one now and again. I was getting them on a weekly basis before.
Hope this helps. Ps. I don't work for sensodyne!!!! 🤣

I get them really bad from citrus fruits, and they range in size, but I always more than 1 at a time. The worst is when they form down my throat!

So, I looked into a little and the internet says l-lysine is really good to reduce/stop them.

They could be linked to anything, so it may be worth having a diary of foods eaten/stress/anxiety maybe?

Hope they get better for you. Anbesol liquid helps a treat when I get mine

Also don't bother buying these pastes and creams as they don't work and just slide around your mouth and are a waste of money!! Warm salty mouth wash (as awful as it is!!) will keep the areas clean until they heal. If you really can't stand to do that then Colgate peroxyl mouthwash.... NOT corsodyl or any other chlorohexidine gluconate mouthwash as that will stain your teeth brown!! 😬
Ulcers will always be there for approx 7-10 days with a few days of awful pain and discomfort!!
Xx

Sorry dimpledumpling just seen your post as I sent mine!! Xxx

Freezingwinter · 24/09/2017 22:10

Chlorhexidine mouthwash seems to help mine. Not sure if they prevent them but seem to help them heal a bit quicker..

Bobbiepin · 24/09/2017 22:11

Avoid citrus and tomatoes like the plague, pineapple is meant to help. Not sure if fresh or juice is best though.

Thank you all! As much as it isn't great for anyone else that suffers - I'm glad it's not o lay me that get lots of them!

I have one on my tongue right now, but have suffered terribly until the last couple of years when they decreased significantly. My record is 28 at once! However, that was when I found out I was allergic to ibuprofen and that was just one of my reactions (lovely red itchy rash too).

The recent reduction I have attributed to a change in diet. I'm 49 and have had terrible ulcers since primary school age, and have been vegetarian since age 16, but about two years ago I realised I was intolerant to eggs and soya. As you can imagine, that's pretty inconvenient when you're a vegetarian, but at least my ulcers diminished markedly when I cut them out.

mrsRosaPimento · 24/09/2017 22:51

I've been better for using mouthwash. If they're really bad can you get antibiotics. I did once but a giant one had inflamed my tonsil. Salt water mouth was on the ulcer dries them out quickly.

Crumbs1 · 24/09/2017 22:54

Difflam. It was prescribed when I was having chemo (your mouth tends to disintegrate somewhat) and was brilliant. I've always had some in the medicine cabinet ever since.

APaperMe · 24/09/2017 23:02

Corsodyl mouthwash seems to help get rid of them faster for me. I get them whenever I'm a bit run down, but also if I eat too many sugary snacks. It helps to drink plenty of water too.

TheCowWentMoo · 24/09/2017 23:05

Try avoiding foods that contain benzoates, such as crisps, tomatoes, ketchup and fizzy drinks and also chocolate. They can also be a reaction to medication. I would also consider getting your iron and b12 levels checked :)

mommybunny · 24/09/2017 23:08

I always find I get them when I get lazy on before-bed teeth brushing, and I’ve been eating an inordinate amount of sweets. Once I was working in New York and discovered bulk gum drops and was in such agony it gave me a mild fever.

If I feel one coming on I become very diligent on keeping my teeth clean and they usually calm down.

IlonaRN · 24/09/2017 23:18

I used to get them a lot.
SLS-free toothpaste fixed it. Now I rarely get them (and it's usually if the have to use a toothpaste with SLS for some reason).

Lidl's own brand toothpaste has no SLS, but does have fluoride, tastes nice and is very cheap!
