The story of my ovarian cancer discovery is here

This is such an important health issue - there's a reason why OC is called the 'silent killer'. I really want more women to be aware of what few symptoms there are (I wasn't).

This is my story. I hope it's a long one.

Everything went very smoothly this am. I got there for 8 and had bloods taken, plus obs, urine etc. I didn't get to take the tablets until 11am as bloods took a while to come back. Three little magic pills, which thankfully are not big ones.

I asked about the latest scan today and was told there has been disease progression (not a surprise) but I don't have lung mets, which is in complete contradiction to what I was told two weeks ago. That's got to be good news but apparently I do have a tumour in the middle of my chest but there was nothing to say what it was attached to.

I also have a reticulation of cancer - a kind of network - under my left boob and in my left quadrant. I do get some occasional pain there so I'm not surprised, plus a tumour low down in my right groin. The tumours had grown a little over the past 3 months but not massively so.

It's all very quiet and calm at the hospital because I'm in the early phase clinical trials section. I was in a 4-bed ward with its own bathroom, with two others in for iv chemo and one other on tablets. Very different from Royal Berks where I was treated in a busy ward with about 20 - 25 others, which I didn't mind at all as I'm quite nosy and like seeing other people. Xmas Smile

Lurker popping in with some flowers for hospital bedside 💐.

tubspreciousthings · 27/12/2018 18:10

Hello TQ - glad all went well. Sorry to hear about the progression, will this treatment trial stop further growth or shrink what's there?

Gonegrey31 · 27/12/2018 20:26

It must be a great boost to know that you have resumed active treatment. I'm relieved you should not feel immediate after effects. Take it easy now !
Lots in the press in recent days about the remarkable progress at the Crick Institute looking into these trials. I was lucky enough to sit next to Sir Paul Nurse , Nobel Prize winner for medicine, at a recent dinner. He was very positive about the advances being made in the treatment of cancers - and proud that important trials ( he did not specify which he meant) were taking place involving uk patients.

TwitterQueen1 · 27/12/2018 22:40

I spoke too soon about feeling side effects.... just thrown up... bleurgh.
Ah well, I feel better now.

Thanks for the flowers Year Smile
Tubs The Olaparib is intended to stop the cancer cells repairing themselves, which means they die. The Cediranib is targeted at cutting off the blood supply to tumours so again, they die. They work in different ways but hopefully they will shrink/kill the tumours. I'm not sure they will prevent the growth of new ones though.

GG I am in awe of the incredible work these scientists do. They devote their entire lives to amazing work that we at the 'front end' can only benefit from. That was some dinner companion!

Oh no! So sorry to hear about sickness. Hopefully no more - I agree, these people are wonderful and the progress they've made over just the last couple of decades is remarkable. Take it easy and fingers crossed it was a one off sicky thing. Thanks

Gonegrey31 · 03/01/2019 17:42

How was today TQ? I hope you are not feeling too unwell. Brr it is cold today, wrap up warm and take care.

TwitterQueen1 · 04/01/2019 16:30

Tx GG
Had amazing energy this am, though it's all gone now - normally I run out of steam about 1pm but lasted til 3pm today.
However, porridge for breakfast and hummus for lunch was obviously too much stimulation so I think I'll stay close to the loo for the rest of the day. Xmas Blush Xmas Wink

Hi TQ, how are you doing? Just wondering if you are still feeling as okay as last time you posted or whether the tablets are making you feel rubbish?

My riding and gardening jumper is nearly finished! I suspect it won't be the most flattering garment in the world but, being made of Shetland wool, it will be divinely warm! After that I told my dear friend who sadly lost her young baby last year that I will help her by making some crocheted octopi for the neonatal unit at G Ormond Street. my friend tells me that the little tiny babies derive a lot of comfort from holding onto the tentacles.

Another one here wondering how you are. I’ve followed your journey and am so glad you got on a trial. Hope this year is good to you.

TwitterQueen1 · 09/01/2019 20:53

I'm doing well so far thanks, aside from a few bouts of dire rear and nausea. I took DD3 back to uni yesterday but decided it wouldn't be a good idea for me to take anything to eat along the way......

I feel much better today - maybe my body is adjusting to the drugs. Or perhaps it was sleeping until 9am.... I'll know I'm coping when I fancy opening a bottle of wine again. Sadly there are 2 unopened half cases in the conservatory.

Penn I've heard those little octopuses are very loved. My hands are too shaky for anything that requires sewing though.

Did I mention I've got tickets for Hamilton?!!!!! So excited! I may mention this many, many times over the next few months.

I'm up again tomorrow - I'm not expecting any news or anything other than "yes, carry on taking the pills."

Gonegrey31 · 10/01/2019 22:05

I hope you got on ok today and were not too exhausted after that long drive with DD3 (great mum that you are !)
Fingers crossed for no unpleasant side effects .
Hamilton tickets wow , how fantastic!

TwitterQueen1 · 11/01/2019 23:10

Tx GG. Not too tired. tbh it was worse going to Oxford than it was Exeter! The Oxford traffic on Thursday was dreadful - I had to queue to get off the A34 and crawled the whole way, plus the return journey featured idiotic driving by a couple of absolute nutters.

Exeter is just two left turns really - left onto the M4 and then left onto the M5. Grin

I have to start taking blood pressure pills - it's been high for years.

Bugger bugger and thrice bugger. I have to have a week's drug holiday. I have hand and foot - which apparently is very rare. I don't want to be rare, I want to be normal. It's like bad neuropathy, ie pins and needles in hands and feet, plus swelling and skin breakdown - I thought my fingers were going to blister last night. They were very red and uncomfortable and I have some sore area on my feet too.

If (when) it goes away they will know it's the drugs I'm on now and so reduce the dosage. If it doesn't go away immediately it may be a hangover from previous chemo and they will ignore it as it should work its way out....
