DS has bronchiolitis...

He had it when he was 5wks old and was admitted to hospital on NYE for 4 days. It was much worse than it is this time.

He must have a thing for wanting a trip to the hospital on public holidays.

He has had a cold all week and last night he was coughing and gagging so much he was sick everywhere . His little chest was wheezing and it looked like he was struggling to breathe. We took him straight down to A & E at 6am and they put him on a nebuliser.

He has been prescribed an inhaler and just seems a bit flat. He is sleeping lots and not feeding as much as he usually does but that is typical with a cold.

Soooo it is a lovely bank holiday weekend. We will definitely keep him in the house today so he can get lots of rest in bed. If things suddenly turn around with him tomorrow or the day after (as they often do), would you take him out into the sunshine for a bit - maybe a walk to the park? Or would you keep him in until he has got rid of cough etc?

I don't want to do anything to make it as bad as he was before he had the neb but don't want to keep him in if going out for a bit won't harm him iyswim.

perhaps some fresh air would help him breathe easier? Garden, or the local park..

how old?

SenoraPostrophe · 06/04/2007 13:57

how old is he?

ds had bronchiolitis about 8 times between the ages of 8 months and 3 years, bless him. ime once the breathing is OK, they don't tend to be that poorly with it - just like they are with a cold like you say. I'd def take him out. a bit of cold air doesn't do any harm.

nappyaddict · 06/04/2007 14:15

ds has had it a few times too.i was told i could take him out as long as it wasn't damp (ie not at night, early morning if it is or has been recently raining)

Ilovemyboy · 06/04/2007 14:28

He is 17wks old now.

I think you are right - I will wrap him up and take him for a walk. The fresh air might help his breathing.

We all have colds so I don't see what help it is doing us all sat in breathing in each other's germs.

Senora - if you don't mind me asking, has your DS developed asthma? I have read that they can be linked.

I'm afraid so, ILMB - just after his 3rd birthday. It's no surprise though as dh has severe asthma (should've been more gene-minded when I went out with him!). Not all babies go on to develop it though...

Ilovemyboy, my Dd1 has been like this since this time last year. In and out of hospital with what started as bronchilitis at 3mths and then been told it is a weak chest, now they say asthma but wont give a preventor. You have my empathy and I would take him out a little as he isnt walking etc. Just make sure he is kept warm. Also lots of fluids as it helps make the cough less dry and water helps with the chestiness sometimes. Unfortunately my DD1s has turned into a ongoing trip to A+E at least once a month thing..sigh

Ilovemyboy · 06/04/2007 19:39

Senora - sorry to hear about your boy's asthma. I have a feeling that it will develop into asthma as I had it (and outgrew it in my teens) and he has eczema already (as do I!).

These things tend to go hand-in-hand.

Nemo - You are in the hospital once a month? That is bloody awful. And your poor DD. All of my friend's babies are older that DS. A few of them are in nursery and all seem to have constant colds and as he is susceptible to bronchialitis then I am worried this will go on and on and on. But can you do? You can't keep them wrapped in a bubble for the rest of their lives and sit in the house all day.

Another thing I forgot to mention, since the start of the week, DS' poo has changed from a mustardy colour to a dark green colour. It is like spinach!!! Is this normal with a cold? He has barely fed today which really isn't like him but is still pooing and weeing so am trying to stay positive that he is just not hungry (as opposed to having a tummy bug).

Thanks for helping girls.

ilovemyboy - how is your lo? I have a bronchiolitic baby who is now 17 months and a happy wheezer. Like Nemo cant get any preventative treatment yet so live with docs/hospital

ELF1981 · 08/04/2007 21:15

I hope he gets better quickly.

DD had it when she was 12 weeks old and it was the worst experience. We'd rang NHS direct for some advice as we thought it was just a cold, they could hear her in the background, and they said "put her in the car, drive to the hospital and if she stops breathing, pull over and call an ambulance."
It was the worst drive of my life. Stupid NHS direct.

DD is now 18 months, no asthma officially though a doc did prescribe an inhaler to help with a bad cough/chest she was getting in an evening. She doesn't really take it, we dont force it on her, and her cough goes quickly enough.
