Basically in the title... what are the general routine check swabs at the doctors. It's not sexual health as I was told to go to a sexual health clinic for that.. it was just general swabs does anyone know what they are for?

Thanks!!!

Why were you having swabs taken? What area was being swabbed?

Bisquick · 19/09/2017 22:37

If it was swabs in the nostrils and along your pantyline it could be for mrsa. Are you getting any inpatient treatment? My hospital checked for mrsa at booking appt for pregnancy to ensure no one brings it into the hospital iyswim

Vaginal swans that weren't part of a sexual health screen? Was this as part of your smear test? That's the only routine vaginal "swabbing" I can think of

BrutusMcDogface · 19/09/2017 22:42

Smear?

How come you had vaginal swabs taken without knowing why, though? Didn't you ask? Why were you there in the first place?! (Sorry, but sooooo many questions!)

Basically I've been having pain for the past year and problems down below etc Sexual health was clear but I did ask at the doctors but just said mixed swabs? And I didn't really understand what for I'm only 21 so having a smear is to young at the moment! So I just had mixed swabs vaginally.

A vaginal swab will usually test for thrush and bacterial vaginosis, neither of which are (generally) sexually transmitted. To test specifically for STIs you would need to have a transcervivcal swab and other tests.

I work in general practice. We can only swab for general bacterial infections, (such as BV), thrush, chlamydia and gonorrhoea.

We can't swab for syphilis, herpes or TV. We don't routinely take blood for HIV, hepatitis A, B or C.
