After sepsis

I had sepsis this year, and whilst it wasn't life threatening I was in hospital for a long time whilst they figured out the right antibiotics and I had a further 6 week course of them.

It's been 3 months since I stopped taking ABs but I've just had a run of a couple of nasty infections/virus' and I'm feeling wiped out.

Is there anything I can do to boost energy levels or my immune system?

I think it's fairly normal to get ill a lot after sepsis (see post sepsis syndrome). But you could try a high dose vitamin d tablet to help?

The antibiotics will have damaged your gut biome, which can cause all sorts of issues including a general malaise. Not had sepsis but had some hefty antibiotics to treat cellulitis, also had cancer.
Have a look at Michael Mosley's good gut guide? Would recommend fermented foods so kefir, sauerkraut, apple cider vinegar etc to try to rebuild. I try to eat low carb, no sugar, real food not processed to try to provide fuel for healing. Doctors get you through the crisis, but there is a lot of healing to do when they have finished their bit.
Well done for getting through it!

Funnily enough I'm just about to start a MM diet - low carb no sugar etc but all the healthy gut stuff sounds horrible! Blush

I had sepsis 2 years ago, shortly after the birth of my second child and I still don't feel quite 'right'. Minor illnesses still knock me for six and take ages to recover from. I take probiotics, high dose vit D, vit b12 and have a varied and healthy diet but it doesn't seem to be helping. Watching with interest.

We make water kefir and milk kefir now but have previously bought from sainsbury, on the shelf by milk. Several flavours, I remember the pink one being very nice. It's like a drinking yoghurt, might be worth a go?

I also take vits including a high dose vit D.

It took me a year to recover from sepsis, and I sometimes still feel the effects almost 2 years later. It could be worth getting a full blood count done to see if there are any particular issues - I was anaemic for a while after so took iron and B12. I also took probiotics.

In the end though, I think it just takes time. Your body has been through a lot so resting and eating right are essential.
