Hi,
So DH is at a and e having just had a scan and he's been diagnosed with a blood clot. This is his second - his first was diagnosed in Jan. He's not overweight, he exercises and eats healthily. Yes, he travels for work but he's been taking breaks and if in a plane he follows precautions. Why has it happened again?
I'm with DC at home and he's just waiting to speak to the dr. I just feel so fed up for him.
Does anyone have any experience of this? Will he be on medication for life now?

@bear how does your friend with 4DVTS cope with the anxiety of wondering if he/she is going to have another one?

Antithrombin deficiency.

Bugsylugs · 19/09/2017 20:38

Unfortunately once you are on an anticoagulant you can't test the blood to see if it is 'sticky' bit of a long time if he last flew in June or has he done shorter journeys ? Sometimes they look for a cause maybe by scanning the pelvis and abdomen.
Frustrating for you both

Suzysuz · 19/09/2017 20:41

DH also on Rivaroxaban, likely for life, after having multiple blood clots (pulmonary embolisms) in the different quadrants of his lungs.

All sorts of tests done, no family history, no travelling so we just don't have any reason why but thank goodness he was diagnosed in time as he could have died from them...

He's middle aged, fit, eats healthily and works out - it's awful when you don't get a 'reason' or something you can pin down as a cause Sad

bearstrikesback · 19/09/2017 20:50

My friend is remarkably blasé about it - he usually is on a plane at least twice a month too. He has been fortunate though and has not had any pes (pulmonary embolism) which are actually quite frightening to experience.

Treatment varies massively depending on where you live. I am so cheesed off with weekly testing at clinics that I offered to buy my own testing kit. They will not accept the results from self testing.

I was put in warfarin for life at the A&E diagnosis appt immediately following a scan. No obvious cause for the second one, first was thought to be pregnancy.
It's all a bit o a lottery.

FiveMoreMinutesPlease · 19/09/2017 21:30

@text that sounds so frustrating for you. The whole NHS is a postcode lottery though I can't complain as they have been brilliant with the other parts of my family recently.

Can dehydration/diet really cause a blood clot as a op saud?! Surely there has to be other factors at play too?
The NHS likes to treat not diagnose it seems?

Google anticoagulationeurope.
All the up to date information is on there.

Sympathy OP. My dad is currently in hospital, at first he was in for dvt in his leg but now been diagnosed with a pulmonary embolism.

This is his first instance, but they've told him he'll be on warfarin for life now.

We've been told the clots will go on their own in a few weeks, the meds are to prevent more/it getting worse.

I am a carrier for factor 5 Leiden so wonder if he has it, but they won't test him because he's old.

FiveMoreMinutesPlease · 19/09/2017 21:56

@suzysuz that's bad and makes you think, "why me?".
I feel less alone with all your replies - thank you 😊

An American website, but a comprehensive list of causes.

The NHS is amazing, 2 to 2 hours in a busy clinic is not the best use of anyone's time but hey ho.

But not having a testing for causes because of age is shite. It's important to know, never mind hereditary issues.

Margomyhero · 04/10/2017 20:46

I have Factor V Leiden. It's more common than you would think.

i only had the test as my father told me that he was diagnosed. Turns out both me and my brother have it.

I have had two dvts so am on meds for life. I was on Warfarin - until today when a consultant suggested I changed to Edoxaban. I have read up a little on it and there are few side effects for my age and healthiness. Was having a lot of trouble keeping my INR in range so going to the clinic so often was a pain.
