I'm going tomorrow for an investigation. It's unlikely to be anything nasty but GP agrees it needs looking at. I'm not panicking. I am apprehensive and would like to have an idea of what might happen.

So what happens. GP mentioned ultrasound and/or scan but I wasn't taking in fully what was said.

Can anyone tell me what's likely to happen? I'm also wondering as my dh can't come so I'm taking another family member. I'm not happy about this person seeing me in all my glory.

In my experience they will take a history, have a look at the breasts, then do a mammogram.
They should give you the results straight away.

Is a mammogram painful? Should I take paracetamol before I go just incase? I don't like pain.

I've been 3 times with these
Mammogram, echo and once a needle biopsy. Not sure if all have echo too
The 2 breast clinics I've been to were both one stop shop iykwim - tests in morning, lunchtime mooching about and see doc in afternoon

Mammogram a bit painful as boobs squished but doesn't take long

Arrive
See consultant for chat and physical exam
Back to waiting room
Ultrasound and/or mammogram (ultrasound only normally if you're under 40)
Back to waiting room
See consultant again for debrief.

I'm not sure at what stage a biopsy would be taken as I didn't have one.

Ok. Letter says it'll take all morning. I've got DC to collect from school so hope it's no longer than 5 hours.

There is quite a lot of waiting but at least it's all done in one go. Mammogram then ultra-sound. During my ultra-sound the stenographer felt the need to do a biopsy so she just did it then and there. It's not necessarily bad news if that happens. If you have a fine needle biopsy you'll get the results on the same day. Mine was a core biopsy so I had to wait a week. Mammogram is fine, just squashy! My friend who came with me stayed in the waiting room for all of it. Good luck!

DM has just gone through this. Her hospital has a 'one stop shop'. She got mammogram, ultrasound and biopsy at the one appointment and they were able to give her results, to a certain degree. She had to go back for biopsy results.

When it happened to me a few years ago, I had a mammogram but had to wait for a biopsy appointment then had to wait 2 weeks for redo. It depends on your hospital.

Mammograms aren't painful but can be uncomfortable, especially for younger perlite breasts. You won't need pain relief but will feel pulled and squished.

Good luck

Thanks. Good to have an idea of what I'm facing.
