If they send a stool sample off do they routinely test for inflammation?
I've been told "no infection"
Thanks

I think it best to see your gp again . They will know exactly what you were tested for.
Sometimes you can have a phone discussion instead .
If you are still not feeling great it probably the best route .
Hoping you feel better soon.

Thanks for replying.
However I haven't made my very clear. It's my daughter who had the stool test because she had blood in her poo. 2 years ago she had some blood and the stool test showed inflammation. The consultant saw her and wasn't concerned but as it's happened again the GP sent it off. When I rang for the results the receptionist said no infection. She said they don't test inflammation that way which I know isn't true obviously. I am going tomorrow so will ask then but I just wondered if anyone knew if it was something extra that had to be requested or done normally and the receptionist didn't understand.

Hi there are different tests MC&S tests for infection and feacal calprotectin tests for inflammation, the first test takes approx 3 days for results the 2nd anywhere between 2-6 weeks. So no they do not routinely test for inflammation, inflammation is not normal in stools so if your DD has previously had it I would request a recheck.

WORKWORKWORKWORKWORKWORK · 12/09/2017 21:38

My GP told me that faecal calprotectin tests are very expensive. He said that if bloods were fine then it's unlikely they'll do one without a referral to gastro, which might be best for your daughter if she's struggling.

Hope she's okay.

AuntieMay · 12/09/2017 21:43

I work at a Gp practice and we do calprotectin tests all the time- definately prior to referral- different areas do different things so it's best to find out the policy/ procedure in your area.

AuntieMay · 12/09/2017 21:45

I would think the go requested both c&s and calpro and the calprotectin is not yet back in your situation.

Mummytron · 12/09/2017 22:21

Thanks all.
I'm concerned that you say inflammation is not normal in stools. The consultant said that her levels were just over the normal range but unless they were 4or 5 times that they really wouldn't be concerned about it. So it can't be that abnormal can it?

AuntieMay when they send a stool sample off do they have to request the calprotectin test or is that done routinely? I have a pretty useless set of GPs so wouldn't surprise me if he didn't bother!

It's a separate requested test, all tests blood or stool or urine usually have to be specified.

rupertpenryswife · 13/09/2017 05:54

Hi sorry don't panic if the consultant said the inflammation levels were just over then that's ok, it depends on the levels and of course your consultant will have considered this result with your daughters presenting condition. Out of interest did they discover why she had blood in her stools? Also as other poster says yes it is a separate request and whilst costly it's cheaper than a colonoscopy, so is done by GPs. Good luck I hope I didn't unduly worry you.

chloesmumtoo · 13/09/2017 10:16

When my dd had raised calprotectin levels it was caused by another medication. Just thought I would mention that as doctor didn't know about this himself. Dd was on omeprazole at the time so if your dd is on any medications make sure it does not affect results.

Mummytron · 13/09/2017 14:07

Apparently the GP didn't request it with surprises me considering we had a chat about it and it has been an issue for my daughter before. So frustrating.

Thank you, I didn't panic too much!!😄 I appreciate everyone's advice and this is what I love about mumsnet most. I have a telephone appt with the GP to discuss tomorrow. Thanks everyone

Oh and no the consultant didn't really give a reason and suggested it could be constipation. She isn't on any medication so can't be that. The GP said it's probably a tear
