Urgent - how to do the glass test with excema?

DS (7 months) has a rash which I think is just part of his excema but did the glass test just to make sure its nothing more serious, and it didn't fully disappear when I rolled the glass over it - is this how excema normally acts?

He's unwell at the minute anyway with a cold and I think he's teething too so he's not his normal self - since about 4pm he has just cried solidly, I've eventually just got him to sleep. Its quite unusual for his to cry so much for so long and nothing will comfort him so I started to get worried - I'm hoping his skin just looks blotchy because of all the crying but just want to reassure myself.

ok, Worried. Is he responding to you? Rashes are sadly, very common in children when fighting a virus.

Does he have a very high temperature? Is the cry 'normal'or more high-pitched ?
Are his hands and feet very cold? Yes to these might be signs for concern.

However, might it help you to know that the meningitis rash is flat, not raised and bobbly like excema.

Have a look here for some more signs and symptoms.

He just woke up again, I've rocked him to sleep but he doesn't seem to be sleeping very deeply - think his blocked up nose is bothering him.

He is responding to me, just very upset - his cry is quite 'moany' rather than a normal cry. He's eaten normally today and doesn't have a high temperature, his hands are cool but not cold so I'm hoping its just his cold thats bothering him. Its just his rash worried me because it is much worse than normal, and with that and his odd behaviour I don't know whats wrong. Maybe his excema has just got worse because he's under the weather?

Worried - i am assuming since you are refering to the glass test and the non blanching rash you are worried about Men C?
If this is the case and you have ANY doubt get him to a dr or at least call NHS direct. I was unsure with DS1 but took him to the hospital when he started getting worse and he had men c, thankfully we caught it in time not to be serious but if i had left it things may have been alot worse.

You know your own child if your worried seek help.
I hope he is feeling better.

I agree with Csss, if you've any doubt go and take him to a&e or the out of hours drs.

If it's nothing then at least you'll have peace of mind, and if it's not, then at least you'll be in the right place.

Hope he gets better soon.

worried, how is ds?

worried987 · 04/04/2007 11:03

He had a bad night - waking up all the time and crying and wouldnt eat his breakfast this morning, but rash has gone back to his normal excema, think it must have been all the crying that made him blotchy.

Was in two minds about taking him to nursery but once I got him dressed he seemed quite happy so he is at nursery now and have asked them to call if he seems more ill.

Thanks for your help last night - its hard when youre in on your own and just not sure what to do!
