I had that damned Mirena coil taken out on Monday after 2 years. Now my period has started and holy crap does it hurt and it's so heavy :( I can't cope with this pain

Sorry forgot to ask... How long did this go on for for others after having the Mirena out?

May I ask why you had this removed.

Did you have such period pain prior to the Mirena being inserted?.

NouveauBitch · 07/09/2017 14:12

I've had two mirenas with a break in between. After the first one was removed my periods were completely normal but after the second one I had horrifically heavy, painful periods. Lots of people seem to have them for the first few cycles after removal according to anecdotal internet evidence but mine turned out to be because of fucking fibroids.

If you can get to a chemist buscopan, which is used for IBS, seems to be highly recommended for period pain. I had mefenamic acid from the GP but it barely touched the pain at all.

Skittlesss · 07/09/2017 14:54

I had it put in as I have endometriosis and my periods were terribly heavy and painful.

I had it took out as after about 18 months I started bleeding randomly and for the last couple of months I bled nearly everyday. :( also I think it was making me sweat like hot flushes and strangely I started with anxiety and depression not long after having it put in.

I have some tranexamic acid, but will get some buscopan as it's the cramps I'm struggling with as opposed to the heavy bleeding and clots :(

Don't need Mirena for contraception as husband had a vasectomy 5 years ago, so figured I could have it removed to see if I feel better without the hormones.

Skittlesss that's kinda similar to my story. No endo, but have always had pretty heavy periods so I had it put in to try to manage those in spite of DH's vasectomy (having got on with my first when I needed it for contraception). It didn't help my MH at all and I was bleeding pretty much every day. I had it taken out, had some horror periods, then started flooding all the time due to fucking fibroids and had a hysterectomy.

Take the buscopan this month. If your next period is this bad then get your GP to refer you for further investigation.

Hysterectomy sounds good to me. My mum had one in her late 30s for the same reason. I'll see how I get on this time and then ask to be referred back to gynae.

Hi Skittlesss

You have my sympathies, winced in recognition at those cramps.

I had a feeling it was inserted because of endometriosis (was offered this for endo as well but refused it). I think I am correct in stating though that it is still not fully licenced as a treatment for endo although it is used for this and some women just do not get on with it at all.

I would ask the GP to refer you back to a gynaecologist asap; would urge you not to adopt a wait and see approach here.

I would also say that if the endometriosis is sited in different areas like for instance the bowel or bladder, a hysterectomy may not give you permanent relief.

Skittlesss · 07/09/2017 16:15

Thanks Attila, I have a feeling that it may not just be in the womb area either. I suffer a lot of hip pain which is worse at different times of my menstrual cycle. The Gynaecologist refused to do any examinations as she said it could make my hips worse (at one point they were so bad I was on crutches). The Mirena did help with the hip pain but I just think hormonal treatment isn't for me and it's no coincidence the mental health problems started after I got it.

I used to get a lot of pelvic and hip pain as well which was cyclical, my left hip in particular used to be very bad. Although nowadays it has much eased I feel that this was related to endometriosis as well.
