Anybody want to help me weigh up whether to replace my mirena?

It's just coming up to its five years now, and I'm thinking I may not have it replaced. DH has been vasectomised, so it's not being used for contraception, however as I'm on medication that is incompatible with pregnancy, I'm wondering if that is a reason to get it replaced - just in case?

It's been a while since I've had proper periods, but they weren't great. Not the worst, but it's another possible benefit to replacing it.

Just trying to weigh up these benefits with the risks. Plus I'm curious how much of my weight gain (all in the last five years) is related, and would it maybe be easier to lose...?

What do you think?

Oh I meant to include - I've not had any problems with it, apart from the (possibly unrelated) weight gain, I've got on brilliantly with it.

How old are you? If you are over 45 you can leave it until post menopause IIRC. What are your periods like? Keep it in to control heavy periods. In other countries they advise it doesn't need replacing for contraception until 7 years.

If I were you I'd keep it just to avoid having periods. I hate periods and don't think I have any bad side effects from Mirena so it's a no brainer for me. Not looking forward to taking it out when we want a baby..

I'm 31. Periods aren't too heavy since children (not that I have many to compare - 2 children with 18 month gap, first conceived quickly and straight back on the pill when second was born), but frequent (21 day cycle) and painful.

My mum went through menopause in early forties, so I'm hoping I follow that! Grin
