I'm pretty sure its Croup. Hoarse voice, runny nose, seal bark cough last night.

She seems better this morning. What would they do?

I'm sort of ambarrased to go as we go to the doctors SO MUCH. I know I shouldn't be but I'd hate them to think I was
waiting their time.

We go for geniune reasons though. In the last two weeks I've taken dd for fractured wrist then very bad virus and she was hospitalised for 3 days. Ds had bad asthma and a virus with sticky eyes, needed drops.

Don't want to leave it in case its bad again tonight but dont want to go if they can't do anything.

When my dd had croup at 9 mos it was in the evening and I phoned out of hours doc, who gave me advice on the phone: keep baby upright and make environment steamy by boiling a kettle or running a hot bath. As baby had calmed down and was breathing more freely by then I was happy just to go with that, but doc came round to see her and reassure me.

All three of my dds suffer from croup constantly. There is nothing the doctor can do really other than tell you to sit in a steamy room.We usually sit them in the bath making sure the bathroom is really steamy just before bed.We can have really bad nights where they just can't sleep but it only ever lasts 2/3 days and is always gone within an hour of them getting up.

What is croup? I'm now wondering if my ds has it as she has a dry cough all night and now day, runny nose etc.

alibobins · 03/04/2007 18:11

I would especially as she's been unwell i've had two bad episodes of croup with ds and doctor has always prescribed steriods to ease his breathing.

Definitely take to the Doc. I took my DS to emergency Doc on a Sunday recently as he had been bad for 4 nights with a temp tipping over 40degs. He was getting a lot worse. However I was sent home with a bottle of Medised the prat (Doc not son). I thought they might put him on a nebuliser for a bit. I was bad with Croup as a child and was hospitalised when a bout turned to Bronchial Asthma, couldn't breathe, my lips were blue. I was put into an oxygen tent for a few days to help breathing. Nearly 40 years later all I have are a few allergies and the odd asthma attack at times of intense stress. Kids tend to grow out of it.

Definitely sounds like croup. IME, sitting in the bathroom (cuddling infant) with the door shut and the shower running on hot produces the best steam. The most important thing is to keep them happy and calm as stress makes it worse. Stay in teh bathroom for an hour if necessary. Also, put a pillow under the mattress to raise their head. HTH.

My sisters ds had croup a lot and every time it started it was straight to hospital. I guess it depends on the severity.

princessmelTingChoccyEggs · 03/04/2007 19:49

Oh dear

I posted this conversation twice by mistake and the people that answered on the other one all seemed to say that the doctor would just say 'use steam' so I didn't take her.

They were being nice and helpfull but I didn't get the feeling from them, as with you guys, that I should take her.

I did call the doctor though and he said that if she has another bad night to take her in tommorow. I hope she's not too bad. Her voice was going this evening.

Fingers crossed she will be ok. Ds was admitted with it a few weeks ago and we was told a wet towel over the radiator will help and prop the matress up like others have said. They also gave ds nurofen as it helps relax the airways.
