For me, recovery was very painful for a long time. Then I got Morton's neuromas as a result of the different way I was walking. But other people I know have got over it pretty quickly. Only do it if you're in severe pain from the bunion, and can't sort it with different shoes or orthotics.

watching with interest. how much did it cost?

Check if a Podiatric surgeon is performing it or an Orthopaedic surgeon is performing it. The clue is that the first one specialises in forefoot surgery and the latter doesn't.

I have a terrible bunion. Did you get referred by a Doctor?

purpleprincess24 · 13/09/2017 16:46

I had one if mine done about 10 years ago. I won't lie it is painful for the first week or so

I had it carried out privately as a day patient, under a general anaesthetic, however they also put a nerve block from my knee down, which was amazing, didn't feel anything until the next day

My foot was very heavily bandaged and I had to wear a rocker Velcro sandal thing

A week later they removed the bandages and covered the wound with a waterproof dressing, stitches were removed around a week later

Your foot will be very swollen, the one thing you MUST do is rest with your foot elevated as much as you possibly can for the first couple of weeks. I didn't rest as much as I should have done, which meant the swelling took around three months before it was back to normal.

It was probably around four months before I could wear certain footwear

Never regretted having it done though and I wouldn't hesitate if I got another one, in fact I probably wouldn't leave it so long.

Mint - yes referred by GP as pretty much can only wear flip flops or fully enclosed ancient boots.

Purple. Thank you. That's pretty much what others have told me, the foot up bit will be annoying but do-able even at work (desk job)

As soon as you can, you must get movement back into the toe joint, start by using your hand to gently move the joint, trying to go a little further each time (check with your doctor before the op how soon you can start this). This hadn't been mentioned to me so I didn't move it because it hurt, it took me a long long time to get it moving properly.

In contrast, I had a big lump taken out of my knee for a bone graft, the scar was a similar size to the bunion one. I started two days after surgery, just very gently moving my knee manually and within two weeks I had full movement back

Purple - this is why I ❤️ MN

It sounds scary! Ouch!
All those years of wearing beautiful Iron Fist and Irregular Choice shoes. Thank God for Uggs right now.
I will give it some thought and see what my Doctor says.

Footle · 14/09/2017 08:10

ShitOrBust and Lifesastitch, mine was done on the NHS by a podiatric surgeon.
There are 3 pins or screws in my big toe joint, and the movement isn't great.
I won't get the other foot done, I really couldn't face it, but it's a shame my feet don't match. It makes buying shoes even harder. The neuromas needed another operation with its own after-effects, some good , some less so.
But I walk well over short distances, and I'm very glad not to have the original pain.
