Heart flutter? Extra beat?

I have had 24 hrs of a fluttering feeling or extra beat feeling in my heart. I had it for about 24hrs few weeks ago, but it stopped but now it is back and lots of Google says don't need to see GP. But just wondered what Mumsnet thinks?
I do have a controlled under active thyroid, but quite recent tests and all fine and I do have low Vit D. But apart from that all fine, no pain, no breathlessness etc I am relatively fit and only symptom every five minutes or so this funny extra beat/flutter?

GP tomorrow or see how it goes?

GP and ask for an ECG, most GP practices can do them.

I get an extra beat, my heart seems to stop and then thud.
Scared me when I first got them, had ecg and it was an ectopic heartbeat which is annoying but not dangerous.
Go see your gp always best to get things like this checked.

I think going to your gp is wise .They will be able to check you and at least let you know what it is.
Hoping it goes well.

Quick update - the GP could hear it, has take a blood test and is going to refer to a cardiologist & gave advice if a get a run of them or fast HB etc then go to A&E.

Updating my own thread (and Have name changed since starting it)

My cholesterol was 5.9 so that and the heart beat they are referring me to a cardiologist.

I wouldnt worry too much, its good you are having an ECG ,but it can be caused by anxiety, too much caffeine,
I get it sometimes, and sometimes a big extra beat, that i can feel in my head too,
I have had an ECG also a stick on patch, for a few days which revealed nothing wrong
Good luck, worrying about it wont help by the way

busytimesahead · 16/09/2017 16:51

Hi thanks for posting, I am not overly worried about it, when I get a run of them for a few minutes it feels strange, but mostly don't notice it. I think the referral is linked to family history & suspected FH cholesterol, as well as the beat the doctor could hear & I feel.
Although I am not anxious and have very low caffeine intake it could also be linked to thyroid conditions & low vit D which I have both.
Will see what happens when I see the doctor.

I have Supraventricular Tachycardia, which gives me heart rates around 200 beats per minute. The first time I was taken to hospital - as I had a prolonged episode of a few hours and it was caught on an ecg by the paramedics - my thyroid function was checked as thyroid problems can cause heart rhythm problems. (My thyroid is fine).

I also got lots and lots of premature contractions, which do feel like extra heartbeats. These premature contractions can, apparently, cause you go into tachycardia, which is when I felt the flutterings. I would also have near fainting episodes, sweating and breathlessness. I had these for a couple of years and it got progressively worse before diagnosis, but the tachycardia episodes only lasted for seconds or minutes so was never caught on ecg until the prolonged episode. A three-day monitor then also confirmed lots of the premature contractions and the runs of tachycardia. It can take a long time to get a diagnosis if you don't have an issue during the time they do the ecg.

I now attend the cardiologist and take medication and it's all under control. Hopefully, if there is an issue, you will get to the bottom of it soon.

You mentioned 'a few weeks' interval. As I have got older I've noticed I get these in the 3 days or so before period. Also worse if I am anaemic. Sounds like you are not, though. Obviously the cardiologist will advise but might be worth considering if there is a hormonal connection.

Fucky · 16/09/2017 23:35

I got these as a symptom of perimenopause. They stopped when I started hrt

busytimesahead · 17/09/2017 17:42

I am 37 so not sure when premenopausal starts - will do a bit of reading on hormone link etc

My son has had a few episodes of fast heart rate and they mentioned to keep an open mind for SVT if it increases so will mention all this when I go.
