Excessive menstrual bleeding - advice needed!

I'm 46, mildly overweight, have hypothyroidism (treated with meds) and like most women my age, starting to get periods that are troublesome.

For the last year my cycle has been stable, around 26-29 days long, with periods heavy enough to use tranexamic acid and super plus tampons, but the period itself has lasted normally 5-6 days.

This time though is just out of the blue. I started my period bang on time on the 11th August, again taking tranexamic acid, and for me it was light - light being 4 super plus tampons in 24 hrs, no pads. However it went on past day 6, staying light and kept going!

Day 13 (23rd August) was where it got worse - I flooded at work, and had to be taken home after washing my pants out (and sitting on a towel) and it's been horrific ever since. My current flow is such that I've gone through 6 boxes of super plus tampons since the 23rd plus 4 packs of pads so far, and it's not stopping.

Frankly I feel like shit. Any exertion is leaving me breathless and headachey, and I feel reluctant to go out in case I either flood or pass out.

I have a gp appointment monday morning, and that's from the emergency list.

I'm fretting myself to tears here. Is there any way of managing this?

I'm at a loss and slowly freaking out!

If you're feeling breathless and headachy I would ring 111 and see someone sooner than Monday.

Hi I am not an expert but there have been a couple of threads on excessive bleeding in periods and the OPs have ended up in hospital and the bleeding was other causes not periods even though because it is from your vagina that is what you think it is. I think you should call the emergency number because a period that lasts that long and is that heavy could be something more dangerous. One of the OPs collapsed because of the loss of blood. Both of the OPs where lucky to get to hospital when they did. Please call the emergency number because you could be in danger.

Please call and seek medical advice. Better to be safe than sorry.

Imnotaslimjim · 02/09/2017 15:14

Please try and get seen this afternoon. Being breathless can be a sign of anaemia which is a big possibility with excessive bleeding. If you're filling a pad in less than an hour get seen asap

I will. I mean, I know it's not good but

I'm going to get my dd to come over.

I had a very similar experience and used to suffer with terribly heavy periods. I used to flood and once walked in the door and DH honestly thought I had been involved in a terrible car accident! I became dangerously anaemic and became very breathless and at times actually passed out. My hair also started to fall out!

I eventually went to the GP who gave me the option of having a mirena coil fitted, a hysterectomy or a hydro thermal ablation. I decided on the ablation and went into hospital for a day. It worked a treat and although some people never have another period mine did return after about 6 months but was so much lighter (think wearing a panty liner rather than a towel!). I'm now 56 and haven't had a period since December so going through the menopause now so hopefully no more periods ever 😀

You must go and see your GP urgently about this. You do not have to suffer this.

I agree with other posts, my friend started to bleed very heavily. She couldn't leave the house it as so bad. She had a very large fibroid; she opted for hysterectomy as she just wanted to feel active again and afterwards felt just great. The surgery happened very quickly after diagnosis, she felt very relieved. If you are feeling ill now I would call out of hours number , you really can't go on as you are.

mumof06darlings · 03/09/2017 20:42

Hope all is ok op?

Tapirbackrider · 04/09/2017 11:08

Thanks all, it really gave me the push to go and get checked out.

I'm waiting on an ultrasound, & the results of bloods done.

There's a palpable mass in my abdomen which the gp thinks is fibroids, given my other symptoms. I've been signed off work for a week and have got meds for anaemia & to stop the bleeding.

I couldn't walk the length of myself if I tried, but I'm at home & taking it easy.
