Need reassurance - 8 month old with bad cold not interested in milk or water and food won't stay down

Help - feeling very upset as my DS will not drink any milk, will have the occasional sip of water (or let me syringe some in occasionally) and will eat food but keeps vomiting it back up.

This has gone on for 2 days now - he does have a really bad cold - but what do I do? I bet in the last 2 days, he has kept down about 10-15oz of milk and a yoghurt.

I am feeling very upset and frustrated about it - any reassurance that he is going to be ok on such small amounts would be gratefully received.

he will be fine

think your DS is just like my DD...any excuse not to eat..he will not starve himself.

forget the food for now, offer water, watered down milk, or a flannel to suck on or syringe in the water

check his fonatenelle is not sunken, and the skin on his belly snaps back in place if you gently pinch it..

is he doing wet nappies?

is he very feverish?

how old is your DS? syringing some water in every 5 minutes is a good idea. I had the same worries when my little one now aged 18m had sicky bugs as she refuses to drink water from a bottle and drinks only small amounts, shes better at it now i have to say, someone once suggested that ice lollies were a good way to go. I'm sure your DS will be fine, keep up with capol in case he has a temp and feels shitty and if he is a baby still check his fontanelle as this looks sunken if he is dehydrated, also if he is making wet nappies thats a good sign too. All second hand advice that reassured me, and in the end, if you are worried, take him to the doctor, its what they are there for. Made doctor look at DD three times in one day once as she had really bad diarreoh, tramped down to the docs with feacal sample in tow and made him send it off - came back as a virus and by the time we got the results she was better anyway but stuff it, its what we pay our taxes for.

great minds lulumama

Hi Lulu - glad you are around. Things are just getting on top of me tbh as we seem to be back to square one with DS - except this is the first time he is actually refusing milk - tried the syringe but can only get a bit down him before he objects. I think he can't drink it because his nose is bunged up so he prefers solids - but then he just pukes those up.

Nappies are wet - although not soaking and quite yellow. He is not feverish now (he was Friday and Saturday) - temp ok now. He is a bit grumpier and irritable than usual but generally ok - he is crawling around under my feet as I speak exploring and chunnering to himself quite happily.

There is a D&V bug going round at the mo. My dd came down with it overnight, and has nothing today except some breastmilk, a few sips of rice milk, and a tiny breadstick. She's just sleeping on top of me at the moment! I'm sure that they will both recover and be fine in a da or two.

Lulu - what does the skin on the belly signify?

lulumama · 02/04/2007 15:34

ceebee.......he will be ok! just keep an eye on him, as you are doing, give him a flannel to suck on in the bath. he won;t allow himself to starve, but he is certainly not going to eat and drink as much..and give him a good few days to get back into his normal pattern, if he does not seem to be improving, pop him up to the docs...esp if his wee gets darker...

poor little thing, and you too, must be up the wall !

lulumama · 02/04/2007 15:36

if babies dehydrate, or are starting to, the skin does not ping back when you pinch it, stays sort of wrinkled

good info on here re signs of dehydration

Ceebee74 · 02/04/2007 15:59

Thanks Lulu - just changed DS's nappy and it was wettish and did the tummy skin test and that is ok - pinged back straight away.

Will try and stop worrying (don't think it helped that HV came today to do his 8 month development check which he passed with flying colours - and he is still the same weight as he has been for the last 2 months - he did lose weight at one point but still peaking at 18lb 5 - but I know I must not worry if he is active, alert etc)

Sounds good - will have to set something up soon. DH starts cricket on Saturdays in a couple of weeks so I will be able to play out on Saturday afternoons.
