She's basically got a cold with a rash, ds2 had it.

yes, she was fine. A day off school when I checked out if it was safe for her to be in school (her teacher was pg)

yes, couple of days of feeling off colour and that was it from memory

PrincessPeaHead · 02/04/2007 07:59

but you should keep her away from anyone in early pregnancy

Flamesparrow · 02/04/2007 08:04

In extreme cases her joints (especially her legs) might hurt like hell - calpol and warm baths help.

(I had it as a child and although my childhood memory is cr*p, that I remember well)

Ds had it a few weeks ago and was fine in himself, just a bit bunged up but he did complain his legs hurt!! The burning red cheeks only lasted about 3 days and he was still playing as usual. He has now got flu like symptoms, had fever for 4 days etc. so this COULD be part of it that didn't come out with the red cheeks? Anyway, AFAIK, it's only a problem if exposed to people in early pregnancy as can (but rare) cause miscarriage.

DD1 had it a few years back. She was unwell like a normal virus and then about 10 days later she came out in a rash on her body and on her cheeks. Apparently that is when they are at their least contagious.

I got it from her but didn't know it was slapped cheek syndrome. It's affects adults completely in a different way. I didn't get any rash just very painful joints. I could barely walk for a couple of days.

Like most diseases (it's known as the fifth disease) once you've had it, you are immune to it.
