have only been to soft play centre three times but everytime we go ds gets ill 24/48 hours after.... like proper ill with big temperatures and nasty virus bugs. The same happens on the few occassions i have needed to put him into nursery for a few hours. We go t play group most weeks so it is not like he is not mixing with other children. is there a point when thier immunity starts holding its own a little better against the bugs or should i be steering clear of soft play????
Does anyone else find soft play centres cause illness in their kids??? He has such a good time when he goes but i am not sure the illness that goes with it is worth the few hours of tearing round like a looney!!! Ds is 23 months by the way.

my kids are permanently ill at the moment, the oldest will be 5 in May...both the doctor and the HV have said that usually by age 5 the immune system is a bit more robust.
So for the oldest i am holding out hope for this summer, but i still have the other two to come along......

my lo's have been ill with bugs for about 6 months almost all the time. my ds' paediatrician says that most of the coughs/chest infections are seasonal and will finish around mid april. hooray!!

Brangelina · 02/04/2007 09:06

I thought it was 2, as in theory you should BF until then to cover their immature immune systems (WHO guidelines), so you may be nearly there . I've been lucky so far as my DD has rarely been ill from nursery or wherever, although every time we get on a plane you can guarantee that 3 days later she'll come down with something dreadful.

I do hope it's not 5 , I was hoping to get my boobs back before then.

Brangelina, I have to say I am still Bf my 17 mth old, and he has got every bug going from the older two, never mind one ear infection after another...it's very depressing....apparently the doc told me 5 as that's the point the have been mixing with other children for a while, but he was probably way off the mark!!

jollyfolly · 03/04/2007 20:50

Have to say i am still bf as well and it does not seem to make any difference to the bugs he keeps getting.... very useful when i cant get him to drink anything else though. Sad to hear ds is not the only one who gets ill so often... ended up with emergency docs this w/e as he kept going blue with his temps v.scary!!! But it is reassuring that he is not unique as all my friends keep commenting on how ill he is and (of course) their kids are never as ill as frequently!!

I really don't know what may be causing it, but a freind of mine told me that her child, who spend the time with one bug or another, stopped having them after they started used a children vitamin supplement (although I wouldn't recommend it for a very young child).

I was a bit worried about this before DS started nursery but no serious bugs have come this way (knock in wood) we don't use vitamins (DS is allergic to one or another) but ensuring he has at least 5 fruit/vegs a day + 2 servings of protein seems to be doing the trick.

HTH

mankyscotslass · 04/04/2007 08:32

Chandra, I too am very careful about the food the kids get, the liquid they drink, the sleep and excercise they get....nothing helps......I have had the older two on vitamins, although with their diet i dont see a need, but again no difference. They are constantly ill, one gets it then shares it round......and then DH gets it, and he is on methotrexate and sulfasalazine so if he gets it then he is worse than the other 3 put together. In 18 mths i think we have had 2 months free of temepratures and bugs. Nothing is more demoralising than seeing the other kids, whose parents let them eat crap and do what they like, never having a day off, and being told by parents "DC is never ill", like i must be doing something to them!!

Just a question, I'm starting to formulate a theory, how many of you have children who suck their thumbs quite often?

In hospital you are constantly told to wash your hands before moving into a different area as more bugs are transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces than by people sneezing over you. A virus would live much longer in non porous surfaces (like in playground equipment), how often are you washing your LO's hands?

My sister came down with a horrible bug before Christmas, within a day or two my parents and I got it, and it was so bad my mother needed oxigen on the way home. I just changed the bed sheets that we have used and kept washing my hands after using a tissue, after sneezing and surprisingly, not even DS or DH got it. Which was a first.

DS hardly ever puts his hands in his mouth, wonder if that may have helped... Impossible task I know, but if nothing else works...

mankyscotslass · 05/04/2007 08:25

No thumbsuckers here either, although trying to get my ds to wash his hands has become a battle.........will try to keep an eye on it, thanks!

jollyfolly · 07/04/2007 00:27

nope... not a thumb sucker here either....
