Any tips on how to lower cholesterol without taking statins please.
What worked for you ?

Cut out as much unsaturated fat as possible and exercise. However, some people have a condition, hypercholaestremia, which means statins are the only real option.

How high is it? Is it really an issue?

Is 6.8 high?

PollytheDoily · 16/09/2017 07:56

Latching on here. My DH has just got his back at 7.2 and going back to the GP on Wednesday.

I think its supposed to be under 5, mine is just over, but both my sisters had something like 9 which is very high
I dont take statins, i think Drs these days try to put everyone on statins
My local pharmacist said she would never take statins, that to me said it all
My younger sister is on them now, but they give her muscle pains and brain fog
Everyone reacts differently i think to all medication

Mine was 7.8, doctor put me on statins, now it's only 4.5. I've had no side effects at all. I'm on 10mg of avorastatin. I had a healthy diet and did exercise, but it was still too high.
The side effects of a stroke or a heart attack can be considerably bad too.

Fairylea · 16/09/2017 14:54

I think the issue with statins is that for a lot of people the side effects can be so bad (particularly leg cramps) that it puts them off exercising and actually eating a healthy diet and lots of exercise are really important in reducing cholesterol. So lots of people don't take the statins and make sure they do the other instead. If you can do both it's even better.

Mine was 7.2.
I've got it down to 5.6 in three months by taking plant sterols.
I take three of these a day.

I find cholesterol so confusing, because on the one hand there are facts and figures that show that women with higher cholesterol are more likely to live longer, and shouldn't be put on statins at all.
There are facts and figures to show that saturated fat is actually good for us and that low fat/low cholesterol are arguably the reason why more people are obese and unhealthy.

On the other hands, we should trust our GPs, who work for an organisation who are still demonising cholesterol and saturated fat.

Sorry, this is very unhelpful, but I would read around the subject, particularly with regard to women and high cholesterol and the link with lower cholesterol with increased mortality.
