Vomiting every 30 mins - advice needed please!

Paddlechick666 · 01/04/2007 18:30

dd started vomiting about 10:30am this morning - in tesco.

since then every 30 mins or so she's bringing up bile. if we let her drink water it comes straight back but if we don't then she dry heaves which is dreadful.

she has no temp, is a bit clammy after a vomit but that's all.

as the day has worn on she's become more listless but during the afternoon she was quite bright really.

any advice on what this could be and what to do?

dh also thinks this may be chicken pox related but i didn't know that CP involved vomiting like this.....

TIA

Have just started strikingly similar thread about Ds. No advice yet as ds has only just started with it.

bunnypeculiar · 01/04/2007 18:34

ds, dd & I ALL had this about 3 weeks ago. Copious vomiting for about 12 hours (foul bile stuff here too , then felt pretty much ok...
"A bug" , in our case, I believe

Paddlechick666 · 01/04/2007 18:46

thanks ladies.

i'm guessing it's gastroenteritis i suppose.

she started at 10:30 this morning so another a few hours and she should be done then!

blardy hope so anyways.

Ds is just getting over this. He was ill for a few days then picked up then went right down and was very sick. He vomited constantly for nearly an hour on Thursday and was bringing up bile.

My GP prescribed dyralite which ds had to take once an hour. You are not supposed to mix it but I did as ds wouldn't take it otherwise.

Ds did get very dehydrated I didn't take him to the GP until day 5 as he had seemed to improve before. On Thursday he was so sick that NHS direct called an ambulance, fortunately he didn't need it. My GP said that with young ones you should give dyralite as soon as they start vommiting or have upset tummies.

I would make an appointment to see your GP tomorrow.

bunnypeculiar · 01/04/2007 18:49

tried giving water to them (& myself!!) but we all just bought it straight up again. As the vomiting was over in 12 hours or so, wasn't too concerned (am dreadfully lax though )
How old is your lo?
It might be worth getting hold of some dioralyte or similar for once the vomiting slows down (flat lemonade/coke is meant to be really good too) as that replaces lost minerals/gives energy as well as hydration
Oh, and we were advised in A&E on another occassion to keep milk to a minimum during/after vomiting and/or water it down...

Chandra · 01/04/2007 18:49

you can give some water but tiny sips every 15 minutes. Hope it doesn't last for long but if you start worrying about your child becoming dehidrated ring NHS Direct.

Chandra · 01/04/2007 18:50

Gatorade is quite good too.

bunnypeculiar · 01/04/2007 18:51

nogoes
If you do give dioraltye, keep the doses very small (depending on the age of your lo) - when ds had gastro as a baby I was littlerally giving him less than 1 oz every five mins or so...

Paddlechick666 · 01/04/2007 19:27

thanks all, she's asleep on her pull-out sofa now so we'll see how the evening goes.

will take her to dr in the morning if she's still being sick.

well, i think we're over it now finger's x'd.

she went thru till about 3am and then wanted to drink heaps so we allowed her a beaker and a bit over the course of an hour.

she woke again at 6am and i got up with her and dressed etc. gave her back to snoozing daddy while i showered and the pair of them slept on till 7:30am!

she's had some toast and water this morning and is doing great so far.

thanks for all the advice ladies, much appreciated.

Glad to hear she is doing fine

Paddlechick666 · 02/04/2007 18:10

unfortunately things have taken a nose dive and she's been very ill all afternoon.

dr says gastro/bug but also slight chest infection.

she's kept her medicine and some calpol down so here's hoping it's a quiet night.

normally she baths every night but we skipped it last night - not sure whether to bath her or not tonight now!

OP posts:
bunnypeculiar · 02/04/2007 18:22

Oh no, poor you. Did the doc give you any advice other than calpol?

Paddlechick666 · 02/04/2007 19:19

nope, just to keep getting water into her.

she hasn't been sick again altho she's trying to.

temp is up to 37.8 and i'm now freaking myself out because i think her skin on her legs and arms looked mottled when i undressed her.........

nhs direct is on a 4 hour call back and her daddy can't leave work till gone 9pm and then it's 90 minutes journey home!

arg!

oh no, poor you, and poor dd
here we're having something similar: ds2 (15 months) has been vomiting on and off since Thursday night. Fortunately, he's only doing it about 4-5 times a day, so I am managing to still get some liquids (still bf him) into him. He's also had some D, so I guess it is probably some D&V virus in our case. We are taking him to gp tomorrow.
How old is your dd? Can you give her some ibuprofen in addition to the calpol? IME calpol stabilises the temp. but doesn't bring it down, whereas ibuprofen does.
Hope she'll get better soon!

Paddlechick666 · 03/04/2007 09:18

Hi

She's coming up to 18 months, was bf to 15 months but self weaned .

NHS direct called back about 11ish and the on-call dr called at 1am.

The D has now started poor thing.

I'm just giving calpol but she's drinking plenty which is a relief at least.

Temp is right down so that's good, thanks for the advice on ibuprofen but don't think I'll manage to get out the house today!

hope your ds is feeling better soon.

Honneybunny · 04/04/2007 20:44

hi again, thanks for the well-wishes: it helped as ds2 is a lot better now. the d&v stopped from yesterday morning, and although he hasn't actually eaten anything substantial yet (he had some plain spaghetti at dinner time today, and some rice yesterday), he seems much better in himself.
hope your dd will get better soon too.
at NHS direct! i gave up on them last time ds2 was ill, then said they had 5hrs call back time, and it actually took them 7 to call back... fortunately we have bupa insurance and with them you talk to nurse immediately.

Paddlechick666 · 04/04/2007 22:05

well, dd had a good night last night and has really started to come good today.

interest in food has increased to the point where she screamed blue murder as i was trying to give her little and often!

she had some toast and banana for brekkie then more banana mid morning, rice and avacado for lunch then avacado on toast snack and scrambled eggs and more toast for tea! with a few water biscuits and lots of water in betweeen. first day she's eaten since regurgitating her brekkie on sunday.

where have my little girl's chubby cheeks gone?!

glad to hear your ds on the mend too, such a relief isn't it?

we have private thru cigna but never occurred to me to call out of hours for this sort of thing. good idea!

thanks!

;-)

glad to hear dd is getting better!
yes, the bupa is a real life saver
they have a 24hr healthline, similar to nhs direct. not sure cigna has the same, but i guess you could check (i am sure if they don't have it yet, they will do in future).
