Shingles pain months afterwards - amitryptiline not suitable!

I had shingles in June (during our holiday - lucky me). It was across the top of my hip at the back and was very painful at the time. Rash crusted over and scabbed. I still have the scars- there were only about 5 spots!

It's now nearly September and I'm still suffering with pain. Oddly enough it's on the front in a line with where the spots are- I even had my gp examine me for appendicitis as it's that sort of area but isn't particularly severe just a naggy tingly shingles type pain so I'm assuming it must be shingles?!

My whole body is still not happy. I am suffering with palpitations on and off (had ecg, all fine), armpit lymph nodes are swollen, I feel flu ish. I have had blood tests and they are normal. Dr has referred me back to endocrinologist for my hyperthyroidism just incase that needs some more attention.

But when is this bloody shingle type pain in my side going to end?! I was taking amitryptiline for ages but they just made me really sleepy and didn't do much at all. I have a disabled son so need to be on the ball!

When is it going to end? Sad

Hopeful bump... I hope I'm not the only one who's suffered / suffering like this. Sad

I can't help with how long it will last but you could ask your gp about trying Capsaicin cream. It used for nerve pain and is very successful for some patients.

Oh you poor thing. I had shingles last year, it can last a few months, it's absolutely rotten. Definitely keep in touch with your doctor if you're struggling or think it's not clearing up as well as they've said it should. I'm no expert on your other issues, don't know it could have caused a flareup, presumably that's why you've been referred.

Might be worth asking about gabapentin or the newer version, pregabalin. Sometimes a short course can calm the nerve pain (that's what they are for btw!)

Thank you so much for the replies and support. Very interested in the alternative drugs and in particular the cream! I will go back to the gp and ask about these. Thank you.
