Calpol and first vaccinations

ds2 is 9 wks old tomorrow.

Today he has been given Men C and Hib vaccines ONLY (Infanrix and polio to be given in 2 weeks time).

He had 2.5 ml of calpol 4 hours ago. Very slight raise in temperature now (0.4 deg above normal) but very grumpy and I suspect he's feeling very grotty. BUT bearing in mind he's under 3 months and that he's due another set of jabs in two weeks time how many doses of calpol can I give?

If I should only be giving 2 doses before 3 months then obviously I want to "save" this (or at least hold out for bedtime today!) If it's whatever is needed (within the 4 doses in 24hrs rule) then I think he could do with a dose now. Advice please!

(sorry for stilted post - one handed typing with distressed babe on other arm)

2.5ml every 4-6 hours but no more than 4 doses in 24 hours (but this is for (3-6 mths) if the health centre have given him the jabs then i would go along with this dosage

Georgina, how many vaccinations should they be getting in total? DS has been "invited" to go for his 1st dip, 1hib, 1st menC, 1st whoop cough, 1st polio 1st tetanus. 6 in total! surely he doesn't get these all at once - he'll be a human pin cushion!

What calpol did you get? the HV advised me to get some but it only appeared to be for 3months or over - sorry for the dunce like questions, am dreading going and feel like asking DP to come with me because I'll cry more than DS!

What with the carseat incident and now sticking needles in him, I feel like a right cow!

GeorginaA · 17/07/2004 18:39

Lol... know what you mean about feeling like a right cow

Apparently they can have calpol under 3 months for just the first vaccinations - my query is how many doses though at this time is allowed - the bottle doesn't really make it clear.

Normally you'd have all 6 in one day - but because we're going for infanrix my surgery has split it into two lots spaced two weeks apart for some reason, so I don't know how that affects how many doses you can have

It's only 2 jabs that they get Men C in one leg and diptheria, tetanus, whooping cough and hib in one jab in the other leg, Polio is oral drops. That's what my HV told me last week anyway. The Men C jab is new to me as they didn't do that when dd1 was a baby.

My HV was perfectly happy for 3 month DS to have Calpol if necessary after first jabs (and he's well below 50th centile).

GeorginaA · 18/07/2004 01:20

Yorkiegirl - he's only on 9th centile (10lb) so I'd be a bit reluctant, tbh.

We decided in the end that for pain we'd try other comforters (breastfeeding, sugar water) rather than calpol and only use the calpol to bring down a temperature. Not sure if that's a good or bad decision! In the event, so much faffing over "should we or shouldn't we" by the time we'd decided his slight temperature was down and he was a bit more cheerful.

However, we did have the first colic episode we've had in ages tonight Really in pain from the wind (I don't think it was pain from the jab as the crying was slightly lessened after each and every fart, building up again afterwards... poor mite - unless the jabs just unsettled his system which caused the wind). I hope that's a one off and not the start up of colic again.

always great to get consistent advice of the healthcare professionals

twiglett lts f areas, including mine, now routinely do dtp-hib for first three injections. Yet one more reason why I want infanrix
