Blurred vision after a fall, normal?

Esssa · 22/08/2017 13:42

I fell from a 16.3 horse yesterday. This meant my head started over 2m from the ground. I was sat 1.7m up. I was thrown forwards over her shoulder and as I fell I turned and landed on my lower back. Then I got back on for her to do it again Blush

I landed on the same spot both times. I can sit, lay down and walk though I have to be careful when moving and bending is difficult as it hurts. I also twisted my left ring finger in the reins. That was all obvious last night.

This morning I have noticed blured vision. Up close its not too bad but the further away things get the blurrier they are. As far as I can tell I didn't bang my head. There are no marks at all on my helmet and I fell on hard dusty surfaces both times. I have no headache. NHS website says bluriness is a symptom of a head injury, which I don't think I have, though I have had a blow to my spinal cord I guess. Question is would you get it checked out? If so who by? Call 111, opticians, a&e or somewhere else?

Call 111 for advice.

OhTheRoses · 22/08/2017 13:44

I'd go straight to A&E.

YellowLawn · 22/08/2017 13:45

WiganPierre · 22/08/2017 13:47

A and E Flowers

JennyOnAPlate · 22/08/2017 13:48

You wouldn't be overreacting to go to a&e. I hope you're ok Flowers

pnutter · 22/08/2017 13:48

A+E from me

Esssa · 22/08/2017 13:49

I should add I am taking codeine and gabapentin 4 times a day already due to Hypermobility Spectrum Disorder so this pain is coming through some fairly hefty medication. My main concern is the vision though as I'm used to dealing with pain and I'm sure that will clear up within the week to a less bruised feeling. Nothing shifts quickly for me.

A&E

Esssa · 22/08/2017 13:51

A&E just seems drastic since I'm walking and talking and not oozing blood anywhere. Don't want to waste anyones time.

A and E.

I delayed once after a horse fall and got a severe talking to from the triage nurse.

ALL head knocks that result in alterations in consciousness (including vision blurs) need assessment. Many injuries are not apparent immediately.

you need to go to emergency. I ended up with a ct scan for a suspected fractured skull (battle sign and everything, not that id noticed)

A and e. Pronto.

StarlightExpress5 · 22/08/2017 13:54

Don't leave anything to chance, get checked out properly.

over501 · 22/08/2017 14:02

You don't need to hit your head to injure your brain - if you're shaken up so that your brain hits the inside of your skull forcefully, there can be damage. You need to be checked out for this, OP.

OydNeverDeclinesGin · 22/08/2017 14:03

Nope, definitely not normal.
You need to go to A and E. It could be concussion, it could be retinal damage.
It definitely needs a medical assessment ASAP.

RedSandYellowSand · 22/08/2017 14:03

The problem is, if you have bashed your brain and it starts swelling, the first signed are it compressing things, like your optic nerve, giving your blured vision ( and probably a headache which has been masked by the other pain relievers you already take). The next step is collapsing. Dad did this. Taking the cut through back from work. He was exceptionally lucky that someone found him and dialled 999. He was blue lighted to hospital 2 weeks after hitting his head and had to have part of his skull drilled out to reduce the pressure.
Please see someone. GP if you can get an appointment today, or A&E. But please see someone.

Esssa · 22/08/2017 14:08

littlemisssweetness · 22/08/2017 16:08

Lolodizzyone · 22/08/2017 16:51

Hope you've gone to A&E and that your okay x I went to A&E who referred me to eye clinic who admitted me straight away and am having surgery for damaged retina in one eye and detached retina in other tomorrow morning. Am bricking it but if don't have surgery will lose sight in right eye x

Esssa · 22/08/2017 19:05

Back from A&E. They weren't overly concerned about the vision. Just told to go back if it gets worse. Xrays for lower spine and finger. All just badly bruised. The daft thing is that the bit I was least bothered about, my finger, is the one I've got a follow up appointment for on Monday! Something to do with the ligaments if it's not just swelling. Thanks for the concern ladies and gents.

Falling hard on your bottom/ lower spine can shock the head too ( the shock can carry up the spine). Glad you are going to get checked out. Hope you are OK
