Tips for vitality and a feeling of "good health"

reebsr33bs · 21/08/2017 08:38

I'm still a few years off forty but feel like I'm no longer in "good health".

I was very ill with pneumonia and sepsis at the end of last year and although I've recovered I feel as if my health has never fully bounced back.

I'm bothered by various things every day and wondered if anyone could help me turn this around and feel young and healthy again!

Ailments list

Weight gain - about 3 stone overweight
Painful lower back - worse when walking for long
Pain in left hip
Feeling of something stuck in throat
Anxiety
Regular indigestion
Regular nausea
Possible low blood sugar? If I haven't eaten for a while I can suddenly feel very shaky and weak, need to eat quickly to feel better
Lack of get up and go and energy
Forgetful
Can get to a point of feeling completely exhausted from a regular day where all I can do is go to bed, even if leaving jobs undone.

Can anyone relate ?

all those can point to deficiencies (iron, d3, b12) or thyroid.
see your gp.

PollyPerky · 21/08/2017 08:52

The weight gain, 'low blood sugar' etc could be diabetes or pre-diabetes. A huge number of people with diabetes are undiagnosed. See your GP for a fasting blood test etc for your sugar.

The painful joints etc are most likely to do with the strain they are under from your weight.

If you are feeling sick and have indigestion your GP ought to investigate - could be a stomach ulcer, or acid reflux caused by your anxiety.

If when you see your GP they cannot find the answer, and you are okay, then losing weight, exercising daily and eating healthily are your goals.

I can definitely relate reeb, to cut a very long story short, autumn 2014 I had whooping cough and was very ill for months.
I have chronic gastric problems, nausea/ indigestion/ feeling of something in your throat are all symptoms of acid reflux.
I've been diagnosed with fibromyalgia and have the other symptoms you describe, no energy, no motivation etc.
Have you seen your GP?
I had to have so many different tests before being sent to the rheumatologist as there is no difinitive test for fibro, it's a long process of ruling out other things (didn't help thst I was found to have extremely low vit D which has similar symptoms).
I manage my symptoms by pacing myself, very frustrating at times, and trying to eat well.
Are you eating much sugar? As that can cause the low blood sugar feeling if you go too long between sugar "hits".
I would recommend seeing your GP.
Hope you feel better soon.

PollyPerky · 21/08/2017 09:03

I know it's hard when you have no energy but imagine the strain your body is under by carrying 3 extra stones- if that was a suitcase you were lugging about all day, you'd be exhausted.

You should see your GP but in the short term you could try ranitidine (Zantac) OTT for your acid reflux if that is what it is but your GP can give you different things.

Are you getting any exercise? I know you won't feel like it if you are tired, but maybe try a 20 minute walk each day, and build up?

reebsr33bs · 21/08/2017 11:34

I do try and walk as much as I can - manage 10k more often than not.

There is something called post sepsis syndrome that seems to have lots of symptoms similar to fybro/ ME but I've always dismissed it.

My stomach never seemed to recover from the insane amount of antibiotics I was pumped with - I took probiotics for a while maybe I should start again. I have issues with feeling sick, bloated, burping, indigestion and this lump in throat feeling that I secretly fear is throat cancer !

I drink too much wine, this can help either - I need to buck my ideas up and look after myself.

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 21/08/2017 12:50

So you frequently walk 10K miles!

If you are drinking a lot of wine you sound as if you have acid reflux which is aggravated by wine. You really need to see your GP to discuss this - they will give you treatment to help and if it doesn't help you should have an endoscopy. You might also need a test for heliobacter p. , which is the cause of stomach ulcers. TBH your weight and drinking sound as if they are contributing to how rotten you feel. Try and cut back but see your GP for tests for diabetes, thyroid and acid reflux. better to have all these ruled out.

PollyPerky · 21/08/2017 12:52

Wine can give you an inflamed stomach lining which would / could account for the indy symptoms. How much do you drink in a day or
week?

Mineshalfamilkstout · 21/08/2017 13:00

A tip :
Ginger in my diet helps my digestion and it is meant to be an all round anti inflammatory that could help joint pain.

It does sound that your digestion should be investigated by the doctor as pps have said.

Boxachocs · 21/08/2017 15:39

Look up low ferritin levels and see if your symptoms match. It's different to iron levels in the blood, its iron stores.

reebsr33bs · 21/08/2017 16:44

10k steps a day - not miles !

I hate going to the doctors but I think I really should.

I only have 1 maybe 2 alcohol free days a week, even if it's just a glass or 2

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 21/08/2017 16:52

I don't understand your last sentence.
Do you mean you drink 5-6 days a week but even on those days you have a drink of 1-2 glasses? (Sorry just read my own back and it doesn't make sense!) Or do you mean you drink 1-2 glasses a day on 5-6 days a week?

If you are drinking a maximum of 6 large glasses a week that is over the weekly limit advised. If it's 2 glasses a day (and a glass is listed as 175mls, not a large 250mls glass) then you could be 2 or 3 times the recommended maximum.

Are you able to stop completely to see if your stomach settles down? Are you slightly dependent on drink ?

PollyPerky · 21/08/2017 16:53

ps- not 'having a go' but it's easy to forget how even moderate drinking can make you feel shit, because alcohol is a poison and toxic.

Chipsandonionrings · 21/08/2017 16:59

I am still overweight but what helped me last year was

low carbing - helped my sore joints, acid reflux and ibs. helping with weight loss.
homemade probiotic yoghurt - for ibs.
vit d - oral spray recommended on here, 1st yr I have not had a cold.
walking and yoga and kettlebells - helped my back ache.

feeling much better overal and happier, even though life is generally more busy and stressful. good luck op

Mineshalfamilkstout · 21/08/2017 18:12

Chips that looks like a list of what I would like to be doing this autumn!

DoraChance · 21/08/2017 18:17

I often have a sensation of something being stuck in my throat, have had it for years. My GP said it could be something called Globus Sensation, where you feel like something is stuck in your throat. Stress can make it worse I think. Obv best to check with your doc though.

reebsr33bs · 21/08/2017 22:23

I think it's probably fair to say that I have become dependant on my wine! I drink it to feel better or to celebrate or because it's Friday etc etc

I haven't tonight and didn't yesterday so this is a good start to the week.

I have abused my body , after my illness and nearing 40 it stands to reason that I have to start taking better care

I live in fear of cancer or diabetes yet continue with all of the bad habits

OP posts:
PollyPerky · 22/08/2017 10:00

It's great you have realised this so that's the first step to taking back control.

Keep at it. If you need it, maybe you could put the money you're spending on wine towards some other treats - make up, clothes, - whatever, to act as an incentive?

But see your dr anyway for a full check up.

reebsr33bs · 22/08/2017 14:38

Going to use this thread to journal these symptoms.

Was in bed quite early last night feeling exhausted.

Was up quite late this morning but felt ok, went for brunch with family and had 1 poached egg, 3 lean bacon medallions, tablespoon of beans and two slices of buttered white toast with a cup of tea.

After a while my stomach bloated and was painful on left side. Feel really fatigued and have a headache, burping a bit too.

Was meant to go shopping on way home but couldn't face it, came straight back and lay on sofa. It has eased although still have headache and feel tired.

OP posts:
reebsr33bs · 22/08/2017 14:38

Have taken some paracetamol and probiotics.

PollyPerky · 22/08/2017 16:30

Maybe as an experiment, keep off the bread and substitute gluten free? Don't want to diagnose you but many people find they have all kinds of odd symptoms with gluten intolerance. Also, the beans can really upset the guts. Genius bread (gluten free) is quite tolerable, toasted.

reebsr33bs · 22/08/2017 19:29

I've been food shopping and have bought lots of foods focussed on health rather than weight loss - I do a daft thing if restricting calories to lose weight but spend the calories on the wrong things.

I'm definitely going to ditch bread and see how I get on.

After I lay down for a while earlier I felt better and mowed the front and back lawns and it totally wore me out, sweating and shaky!!!!

We have just moved house and I did feel very stressed throughout wonder if that has contributed?
