Recurrent thrush

hahavzv · 20/08/2017 21:07

I had never experienced thrush until I was 32 weeks pregnant, which is something common. I was given a pessary, which didn't make much of a difference and so, instead I got prescribed with a weeks worth of pessaries and that seemed to do the job. After I had given birth I was ok. Until just before my first period I had thrush again. I left it as I had started my periods a few days later and the thrush disappeared. This had happened again a few times, just before my period. Now, I am not due my period however, I have thrush again. This is all within a space of 7/8 months. It is so painful and I feel embarrassed going to the GP every single time. Why is it reoccurring? What can I do, myself, to stop this? HELP (Please) Sad

Also experiencing recurrent thrush :(

Fluconazole clears it up for me for a time and I am currently trying to take superstrong acidophilus pills to increase "the good guys" to kill the yeast.

Don't have any advice really just wanted to say I empathise!

Poor you. I expect a few tips will appear very soon. My two pennies worth...

Ensure good ventilation - open bedroom windows daily.

Keep bathroom windows open a little all the time whenever you are at home.

Wash towels frequently at 60 degrees and dry promptly.

Ensure they are 100% dry before you put them in a cupboard.

Good luck.

I went through a terrible couple of miserable years of recurrent thrush ending about 18 months ago. No matter what pessary, cream, tablet combination I tried, it would come back with my period.
I researched loads, and tried various things that in combination got rid of it once and for all.
Switched from Tampons to a moon cup.
Thrush was making me really dry, and I was using standard lubricants, which turn out contain sugars in the form of glycerols which feeds the thrush making it even worse, so switched to "yes lubricants" which are sugar free.
Used coconut oil instead of pessary/ creams for any flair ups.

Hope that helps.

Ventilation Molly?

Has your partner been treated otherwise you'll be pushing it back and forth?

No fabric conditioner or scented shower gel/ soap.

Daily acidophilus capsule works a treat.

My mother had recurrent thrush then in my early twenties I did too. We both ended up seeing the same consultant who cured it. I requested him in fact as he helped my mother and was still working at the local hospital.

Basically the treatment needs to be every night for a month. Pessaries do my head in because bits keep coming out in the day so I had gynodaktarin internal cream - this is prescription I believe. You can get a large tube of cream with a box of applicators. Use every night, just pop a pad on too.

Wash towels regularly on a very hot wash and try to keep them separate from others. Probably worth hot washing sheets too. Pick some canesten or something for your partner to just put on his penis if you have sex without condoms. Doctor told me that it's rare but men can have it symptom less so keep passing it back to you.

Doctor basically said conventional short term treatment is enough to get rid of symptoms but not fully get rid of thrush so it then appears to keep coming back when in fact it never really goes.

I had symptoms almost every month for months and since his treatment haven't had it again. This was about 7 years ago now. My mum had the exact same experience when she was younger.

Hope this helps.

Should say "use every night for a month"
Current post looks like that could mean forever haha

hahavzv · 20/08/2017 21:33

Thanks everyone for the advice. Will have to try them all.
Has anyone used yogurt? As I hear about that quite a lot? Also, I'm breastfeeding so maybe I have no choice but to use pessaries. I find them so uncomfortable

I have suffered too but touch wood been free of it for a while. I say diet is a contributory factor, with bananas being worst! If I had a banana a day for a week I reckon it would return. Also alcohol and sweet stuff. So I cut it out then introduced things back slowly and not too much, seems to have sorted it. Also the flucanozone (sp?) tablet, both of you need to take it.

Crumbs1 · 20/08/2017 21:39

Treat your partner too. Quite easy to be reinfected by spouse.

hahavzv · 20/08/2017 21:40

I did go to the pharmacy last night and they gave the oral capsule. To be honest, I still feel the same. It's not got worse nor better

Reducing the amount of sugar I ate, less detergent on my clothes and sleeping with no underwear is how I have finally combatted it (and obviously using the creams in a flare up)

And yes, treat your partner and make sure they use the cream for the full amount of time (think it's two weeks!)

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 20/08/2017 21:42

The oral capsule will take a while to work. You should you pessaries and cream at the same time.

Make sure the yoghurt is live- eat it and you can dip a tampon in it and insert it.

hahavzv · 20/08/2017 21:47

Coming to think of it maybe it is my diet. I do eat a load of crap to be honest.
Yogurt, just by thinking about it, I feel better lol

Might not be thrush. Thrush is hard to diagnose properly and is overdiagnosed. I had similar to you, with it starting during pregnancy and once baby born, it coming just before my period. Turns out I have weirdly reactive skin, so combined with dryness caused by low progesterone just before my period, I was getting itchy. I had to see several GPs, a vulval dermatologist and an allergy specialist to get a diagnosis. Solved with steroid ointment, moon cup. There's more to it which I can go into via pm if you're interested.

Tucktalking · 20/08/2017 21:51

I had it for many months. When I went for my cervical smear, there was just smelly liquids filled up in there. The nurse advised me to eat more greens inmy diet as that helps improve immunity. Yoghurt worked wonders for me. I had a syringe with which I injectioned about a tablespoon and wore a pad. It cooled the part down instantly. I cannot believe I wasted so much money on pessaries when yoghurt worked so much better.

Mner · 20/08/2017 22:01

I'm suffering as well so it's great to read all this advice

OnePotato2Potato · 21/08/2017 04:18

Random but i switched from using Always to Bodyform (or any other brand that doesn't contain odour reducing chemical). It made a massive difference to be honest. Also agree with PP abt applying yogurt directly to the area but also eating yogurt regularly.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/08/2017 07:21

Oh yes, Always is known for being irritating! Really awful.

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/08/2017 07:22

I thought it was the plastic coating that irritates.

hahavzv · 21/08/2017 09:36

Yes I always use Always. This issue has only started this year. Never had or experienced this before. That's what I find weird.

Gynodaktarin

PutTheBunnyBackInTheBox · 21/08/2017 13:10

Have you tried tea tree oil? I used to work for Holland and Barrett and a customer had thrush constantly. She tried everything from garlic to cutting ALL sugar from her diet and nothing worked. One day she came in and said she started putting 2 drops of tea tree oil in her bath and she hasn't had it since.

If you do decide to try it make sure you don't use more than 2 drops as it's so strong!

DameDiazepamTheDramaQueen · 21/08/2017 16:28

I'd stop using Always, you can become sensitive our allergic to something even if you have used it before.
