Mooncup fail

tygr · 19/08/2017 17:08

Just discovered I've had a mooncup in probably since my last period.

I'm not sure how it happened. I became very unwell during my last period - temp 39.6 - and remember taking out the mooncup I was wearing due to a concern about toxic shock.

I have two and so it's possible that I was wearing two that day and left the other one in - or that even that this one has been in even longer Shock

Anyway. I was treated at GP next day for tonsillitis and given penicillin, and took the whole course. So have had antibiotics already but with potential source of infection still in situ. Temp is now normal but am still unwell and signed off work

I even told the nurse that I was on my period and concerned about TSS. I was very confused, nearly collapsed later that day and so must've somehow absent mindedly either put a mooncup back in while I was ill or had the other one in there already.

Anyway. TMI alert.

My period smells revolting. I removed the mooncup just now and it smells revolting.

I've called NHS direct and am awaiting a call back to see if I might need more antibiotics. I'm going to ttc soon and don't want to do anything to affect my fertility so am kicking myself.

Just looking for some hand holding really. What an idiot. Can't believe I did this.

The only reason I even checked is because I was looking for the second one this morning and couldn't find it.

D'oh.

Anyone with experience of this or medics who can reassure?

Gosh, poor you. I'm sure it only smells revolting because it's been festering so long.

I left a tampon in for a week once and that was not pretty....but I was ok. Hopefully you will be, too!

Ps it's easy to do, which it why they specifically remind you to remove the last tampon of a period...don't beat yourself up about it.

Thanks. Embarrassingly I have a new partner and he said he felt 'something' a couple of weeks ago and I totally dismissed it.

Yikes.

Do I come clean to him. I even asked him about what he felt this morning as I was concerned about the smell.

Oh it's all romantic conversations we have... Hmm

Do you feel well at the moment?

tygr · 19/08/2017 17:16

Compared to how I have been - much better - but still have lower energy levels than normal and have pain internally. Have been very run down since this all started with the fever a month ago.

Definitely no high temp and had blood tests and urine screen done at GP on Tuesday and results all came back in normal ranges.

Am signed off sick until Tuesday. Was struggling to think clearly - v foggy headed a few days ago but that's been better since I started my period.

I'd have thought that the smell was simply because it was old blood mixed with normal mucus etc, not necessarily because of an infection.

Hopefully the internal pain will subside now that you have removed the mooncup

I've forgotten mine on occasion and at least once for several days. It does smell awful but I assume it's just the blood. Same as if it's not rinsed properly.

Hope you feel better soon but can't imagine it's done any harm.

tygr · 19/08/2017 17:29

Hope so. It's been in for at least a month.

Might be a coincidence that I had a fever. But at least I have had a 10 day course of penicillin already.

Presumably any infection in body shows up with raised temp?

I should think it's fine. Some women wear rubber and plastic pessaries to assist with prolapses, and those are worn for a few months at a time before being changed.
