Dental crowns

Hello ladies...I'm new the forum but hoping to get some advice. Had a nasty fall during a horrific miscarriage. It's been pretty awful. But during the fall in managed to smash by two front teeth. One has been repaired with a filling the other had to have root canal and still feels pretty horrible (aches and feels just like it's stuck in). All wondering if anyone else has had a similar procedure, how long it took to settle down etc. (It's been 9 months for me now). Also i am thinking I might need a dental crown 9n the root canal tooth. The dentist says it may be fractured. Anyone had a crown? How do they feel? Have read awfull things about them causing wear on the opposing teeth. As you can see I am deeply obsessed by all this so any info would be great!! Thanks all. X

I recently got a crown on a back teeth. Don't know if the back makes a difference. It's been fine up to now.

Sorry to hear about your miscarriage. If the tooth had RCT it really shouldn't be sore after nine months - the treatment is supposed to remove the nerve from the tooth. I had a crown on a tooth which had had RC - towards the back - and it was fine for many years. It just functioned like a normal tooth. Eventually it fell out and it transpired under the crown was a load of decay, which I couldn't feel because the nerve was gone. I had the crown replaced but the tooth wasn't strong enough to sustain it and I ended up having it extracted.

I have three crowns on back teeth, two were root filled before the crowns were fitted. They have been painless and functional for forty years. You shouldn't have pain in a root filled tooth.

Thanks for the messages. Do you have any wear on your teeth from the crowns? From what I read porcelain crowns can create so wearing down on the opposing teeth which freaks me out. It's bad enough to mess up one tooth...without making it any worse! Any experience of front teethead crowns?

I don't understand how a crown can wear down other teeth?

Judydreamsofhorses · 19/08/2017 21:47

THe crown just acts like a tooth. it shouldn't cause wear on the tooth above/below it any more than your actual tooth.

Fingerscrossed38 · 19/08/2017 22:18

I think it's because the porcelain is harder than natural tooth ennamel. Google it...there are some horrible pictures. But you can't trust the Internet so wanted first hand experience. But you can't go peering into people's mouths...I've tried and people think you're weird ....I've tried it (joke! 😂😂).

Ahhh I see. I've had no problems up to now.

hi if you fell on your teeth and one had to have root canal treatment, and still hasn't settled after 9 months, it probably either needs further investigating. I suspect the tooth has a fracture often they aren't visible on an xray, or the root canal may need re doing. However having a crown on this tooth will not improve the situation, and you could end up losing the tooth. Don't spend money on a crown, until the underlying problems with the tooth have been resolved.
Crowns can cause wear to opposing teeth but this is reduced by ensuring if the crown needs adjusting, it is repolished after. However, in 20 years I very rarely see damage caused this way and usually have other causative factors, bruxism( grinding) acid diet etc.

fingers I've been in the wars with my teeth lately, caused by clenching due to stress, and if there is one thing my (lovely) dentist has drilled - ha - into me it is DO NOT GOOGLE. I got to the point where my partner was activating parental controls on the wifi because I was scaring myself senseless.

Fingerscrossed38 · 19/08/2017 23:15

Judydreams...Google is the worst! But I've had so many second opinions from dentists and they all say the tooth is fine from the x ray and I just need to wait. But in the mean time it is driving me mad so I try and self diagnose (terrible idea). Pullups...I definitely won't be getting a crown anytime soon, but feel it is in my future. Assume you are a dentist? How long would it take for a problem to show up? I had an x ray a couple of months ago and there was no infection or anything bad on the x ray but the tooth is still funny. It doesn't hurt but just generally feels sensetive and mildly aches from time to time. Generally driving me mad just with the waiting and not knowing 😡

I have crowns on my front teeth (4 of them)- had them done after a car accident at age 18 - I am now in my 50's. I have had to have them replaced once or twice (in some cases) due to breakage. I haven't had any problems with surrounding teeth. I have to be careful not to bite into superhard apples, crusty bread etc that can put them under stress or bite tape/thread. I have had the most recent ones for over 20 years - I think crowns are stronger now than the old pure porcelain ones.

I had problems with one initially and needed a root canal - that one broke and I had to have a "post" crown put in (they put a spike into the root as the tooth stump had severed off).

Fingerscrossed38 · 20/08/2017 13:27

Thanks for telling me wormulonian. Sorry about your accident but I try to keep telling myself, they are only teeth. Glad you have had no problems. Assume no wear on the opposing teeth or anything either? I know some people get this type of thing done for cosmetic reasons so I keep telling myself it's not that big a deal...but the idea of losing my teethead freaks me out! 😯

No problems with wear on the opposing teeth either.Even for veneers the dentist takes off the enamel and grinds the teeth down a bit and lots of people are having those done. I'm grateful for mine - so much better than having to have false teeth which was suggested to me back in 1980! When I first had it done the teeth felt huge and I felt I spoke differently but I soon got used to them.

Fingerscrossed38 · 20/08/2017 15:30

Must have vern horrific being so young... glad you are happy with them. Do they still look nice and natural after 20 years? I've seen some people and at the time didn't realise they were crowns but now I am an Internet expert in realise they were crowns...with that grey line at the top or not quite the right colour. I truely driving myself insane!
