Fed up with GP

Really upset with my GP to the extent I am thinking of moving. I know the NHS are overstretched but am fed up with feeling like I am a nuisance every time I try to get an appointment or see a dr. There have been many issues over the last few years which I have grinned and beared but really had enough now. I am prone to cystitis and spent most of last weekend in extreme discomfort, running to the loo ALL the time, burning when I wee, woke up every 2 hours through the night to run to loo etc. Finally get to Monday and try to make an appointment to be told that the new appointment is in 2 weeks. I try to ask if there is anything sooner and am told there is an emergency surgery, is what I have an emergency? I say, it's not an emergency but it can't wait 2 weeks, at which point I get a lecture about how it's only for emergency use, at which point I insist and say I cannot wait 2 weeks to see someone. She relents and says that I can see emergency dr later that day. So I see dr later that day who, after being convicted that no, I don't have an STD (married for nearly 6 years, never had an STD in my life) gives me antibiotics but the whole time then makes patronising comments and gives me a lecture about it being an emergency appointment. So fucked off. I have worked full time since the age of 23 (save for 6 months maternity leave x 2), I paid a shit load in tax and would like to see a GP who does not lecture/patronize or make me feel shit for trying to book an appointment. Does anyone else have the same thing or it is just me?

I don't know much about UTIs, just wondered if a pharmacist could help you.

Illhavewhatsheshaving · 18/08/2017 21:29

I work at an emergency clinic like that and this is exactly the sort of thing we are there for. UTIs need antibiotics from a doctor. The receptionist and doctor shouldn't of lectured you about that at all Flowers

It's crazy. Our GP has urgent appointments you can ring for...but you can't get through, and when you do they are gone. Or for a routine one it's now 6 weeks wait!

I've experienced similar at my surgery, ie being admonished for taking an urgent appointment. The alternative at my surgery is usually a 4 week wait - if there are any routine appointments available, sometimes there are none. I just phone and ask for a prescription for cystitis now, and usually get one the same day.

Thanks all. Feel marginally better it's not personal. A pharmacist cannot prescribe antibiotics which is what I needed. Had self medicated with the sachets you get for 3-4 days before it took a big turn for the worse.

User, I did speak to the dr on the phone initially and asked for a prescription as I often get cystitis. She told me I had to come in. She just made me feel like utter shit at the appointment and, after a crappy day at work and extreme discomfort with cystitis, and not being taken seriously, it was really upsetting. What's worse is that she only gave me antibiotics for 3 days but I was still showing symptoms so I called again and asked if I could be given another prescription as it hadn't cleared up. Dr called me back and said she would leave a prescription at the desk which I went to collect today but no sign of it so had to wait to see the emergency dr to be patronised yet again! So fed up. Just reviewing other local surgeries and they don't look any better. Does anyone know if you can go private to see a GP? I would honestly rather pay to see someone who doesn't make me feel like I am a massive pain in the arse for daring to make an appointment.

If you are prescribed Trimethoprim for cystitis you can buy it over the internet.
eg www.doctorfox.co.uk/
May be worth doing if Trimethoprim works, but in the past i have sometimes had an infection thtat is resistant to it, which may be what happened to you if the symptoms didn't clear.
You have my sympathy as cystitis is a really horrible painful infection.
