Resting pulse rate of 51. Would you go to GP?

I was watching 24 hours in A&E this week and they were treating a gentleman with a fast heart rate. I decided to test mine for fun and it was 55. I checked Dr Google as you do and it said it was on the low side. Athletes tend to have rates below 60.
I do no exercise at all!
I tested again now and it was 51.

As an aside I have had a few instances of feeling faint in the past couple of weeks but I put it down to standing up too quickly.
I have a health check with the GP booked for 19th September. I'm 41 so have been sent an appointment for one of those age related ones.
Would you try to see a GP sooner?

Thanks.

Can you take your blood pressure? Boots do kits that you can measure it at home with. That might give you more information too.

notapizzaeater · 18/08/2017 13:23

I have a really low pulse rate. My GP isn't worried about it - normally about 48

Thanks for your replies.
I rang 111 and they advised seeing a GP.

Do you do a lot of sport/exercise? It's usual to have a lower heart rate if you're very fit.

FuzzyOwl · 18/08/2017 14:01

DH's is usually in the 40s. Some people just have a low rate and that is normal for them. It probably makes sense to get yourself checked for reassurance though.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 18/08/2017 14:13

No, do no sport.
I know my rate was 72 about 15 years ago.

Are you on any medication that might affect it?

BertieBotts · 18/08/2017 14:40

Mine is normally around 59, I'm not fit either though I do walk a fair bit. Are you a small person? I'm quite slim and average height and I wondered if that was why. I've had an ecg and surgery recently and they didn't mention it as being a problem.

IveGotBillsTheyreMultiplying · 18/08/2017 14:49

Are you quite young and active? Or could you be hypothyroid?

Mines 52 by my Fitbit but I am a runner.

FoodieToo · 18/08/2017 15:39

Mine is the same OP. I exercise a lot but am not athlete fit levels!!

I also think the Fitbit readings might be on the low side.

lljkk · 18/08/2017 16:01

No I would not see GP just for that.
Standing up suddenly makes me almost faint too (& always has). It's my normal (lifelong).

Do you have some real signs of poor health?

Rubyslippers7780 · 18/08/2017 16:02

Mine is 52. I am not an elite athlete...

CaptWentworth · 18/08/2017 16:08

Do you have some real signs of poor health? I'm sure that wasn't intended to sound as bitchy as it did....Hmm

I'm a nurse. Although a heart rate of 51 isn't a problem for most people, the fact that it's unexplained makes me think you should see your GP. If you were an athlete, as you mentioned, you would expect to see a HR like this, probably lower even.

CatchingBabies · 18/08/2017 16:09

Many people have a low heart rate, if it was in the 70s 15 years ago then it's always been low and that's clearly normal for you. If it was a problem you'd have noticed in 15 years!

NHS direct tell EVERYONE to go the doctor / hospital.

CatchingBabies · 18/08/2017 16:10

Obviously if you have / develop any symptoms that you're worried about then go and see your GP however. Should have added that. But a low heart rate alone wouldn't worry me.

CherieBabySpliffUp · 18/08/2017 17:00

Again thank you for all your replies.
I guess 111 are just covering their backs but will see what the GP says.

No unless you are tired or breathless all the time.

hairymuffet · 19/08/2017 21:40

Yes, you should see your gp.
You could have developed some kind of cardiac arrhythmia.
However, it's not an emergency unless you have symptoms.

augustusglupe · 19/08/2017 22:27

My Fitbit says 53 when I'm very rested. I exercise a fair bit.
