Hysteroscopy + biopsy + polyp removal

Just been put on the waiting for this to be done. I'm quite squeamish & dreading it.
Gynaecologist says I've a large uterine growth that needs investigating plus a big cervical polyp & I'm having irregular bleeding - which I presumed was because I'm 50 but I've no peri menopausal symptoms.
How have others got on?
Husband's offered to pay for me to get it done privately. It's £1750 but I don't know how much sooner it'd be done yet.
I came back from the gynae appt this morning feeling quite tearful as I'd gone on my own.
My son who's nearly 20 & is autistic knew I had a hospital appt, but was just concerned about where we were going for lunch. 😉

Hi Woowoo98

My daughter might be facing something like this - could you let me know how it goes please?

Best wishes for the day

PollyPerky · 22/08/2017 08:41

Good luck woo woo. Hope you get on okay. Put your feet up afterwards and take care Flowers

Fluffycloudland77 · 22/08/2017 08:44

I had it done with no la, genuinely didn't feel a thing.

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 22/08/2017 08:53

Polly you can have my first ODFOD.

If men were ever told their pain was due to "anxiety" you may have the beginnings of a point. They are not the ones being told than their pain is not real and they can't have proper pain relief. Women are.

Maybe try your "anxiety" advice on a woman who experienced a hysteroscopy like mine, or the MP mentioned upthread? Good luck.

PollyPerky · 22/08/2017 10:02

Younggirl maybe you have lost your way from the AIBU forum? This is Health not a place to keep on conducting an argument over nothing.
Peace and love Flowers

I had it done under a GA, I find smear tests excruciatingly painful, the gynae td me that she prefers doing it under a GA as a lit if he'd patients opt for a LA and the the procedure has to be abandoned and rebooked for another day.

That's just my experience, lots of different experiences to balance it out 👍🏻

FabulouslyGlamorousFerret · 22/08/2017 10:03

Gosh my SPaG is shocking 👆🏻.. sorry

YoungGirlGrowingOld · 22/08/2017 12:06

FGS Polly since this forum is mainly populated by women it's not really the place to peddle your "it only hurts if you're anxious" bollocks either is it?

Woowoo98 · 22/08/2017 12:50

Very pleased to report it's all over & done with & I managed without any anaesthetic. I had one polyp pulled out which was the worst part as it took a while, the interior polyp was cauterised. The camera went through the cervix OK & I'd describe the feeling during & afterwards as bad period pain. To be honest it wasn't quite as bad as I thought.
I was lucky I had a Consultant & not a junior doctor plus he said he didn't see anything sinister. I was even brave enough to watch part of it on the screen!
Going to buy a big box of chocolates for the lovely HCA & Nurse who talked me through it.
Just a case of waiting 2-4 weeks for the endometrial biopsy & polyp biopsy results & I've got to have a scan to try & see why my uterus is enlarged.
Big sigh of relief & thanks for everyone's input ☺

I am pleased it wasn't too bad Woowoo - I hope you feel more yourself soon

orzal · 22/08/2017 17:12

I'm so pleased that it wasn't too bad Woowoo98.

PollyPerky · 22/08/2017 17:41

Glad you are okay Woowoo. Take it easy and am sure your results will be fine. Flowers

Deb65 · 10/12/2018 12:14

This has really helped I am absolutely petrified having this done tomorrow afternoon because I have post Menopausal bleeding had a transvirginal scan on Thursday and my uterus lining is thicker than it should be
So scared of the results too

l1oness · 26/08/2019 13:46

PollyPerky you are behaving horribly, and the worst part is that you are not even aware of it. First you undermine the painful experience that YougGirlGrowingOld was kind enough to share with us with your dismissive and patronising comments, with no knowledge whatsoever of her as a person. It turned out she could give the rest of us a lesson or two about the undergoing this procedure. Then you have the nerve to call her rude, when the only person who has behaved rudely is yourself. And then, you have the audacity to tell her to chill, which is beyond patronising. It is demeaning and insulting. It has been a while since this thread was written but I couldn't help myself. That is my opinion. Are you going to insult me too?

NoSauce · 27/08/2019 06:55

l1oness how bizarre that you’ve bumped a two year old thread to tell someone off.

Why would you do that?

l1oness · 27/08/2019 22:03

NoSauce, for the same reason why you have decided to answer to my post. It's not that bizarre. I was looking up hysteroscopy and it came up in my search. The threads remain alive for people to read the useful information that people share. It doesn't matter that it's 2 years old. It's totally relevant. And it bothers me when people are unkind to others for no reason, so I posted my opinion. Isn't that what forums are for?

NoSauce · 27/08/2019 22:13

It’s bizarre that you felt the need to tell someone off from 2 years ago. Look up old threads for reference if you like, I do fairly often, I just found it odd that you would have a huge rant at someone when you weren’t on the thread in the first place.

But if it makes you feel better, crack on..

Egghead68 · 27/08/2019 22:42

I’ll take the opportunity to post a link to the campaign against painful hysteroscopy as severe pain is a problem for a significant minority:

Thank you Egghead. I would also like to share a link I found Where a lady explains her personal experience:

MetalheadMoana · 06/04/2020 17:17

I know this is an old as thread but it's the only experience thread that comes up on Google search for this topic and I think it's important that there's a balance of experiences shared. Clearly for many women this is no worse than a smear, but having just returned from the hospital after a failed polyp removal I'd just like to back up the poster from the other side of this coin that sometimes this procedure is NOT a walk in the park. Like the other poster, I have a pretty high pain threshold and went into this expecting some cramping like I had been advised, but what I went through was excruciating and after many attempts at entry with the second scope (for the polyp removal) including with gas and air, after a cervical injection and then finally with cervical dilation, the doctor still could not make entry in the womb and had to give up. The experience was the most painful thing I've gone through, despite 5 years of chronic illness and countless procedures, both fertility and non. I don't put this message here to scare anyone out of having this procedure, I'm writing simply so that any woman who walks away from the encounter feeling exhausted, sore and beat-down doesn't have those feelings compounded by comments that she was probably 'anxious' or simply doesn't have a high enough pain tolerance.
